Most other neighborhoods are not desirable. Finding an apartment in Manhattan proper just isn't cheap anymore. There are more renters than apartments.
New Yorkers has a high cost of living but $200k still puts you at around the 88th percentile for NYCers. If 87 people out of 100 can make do with less, they can to. Thief is right, it's enough money for anyone to live comfortably. Anywhere.
Now, if you're trying to live a $500k lifestyle on $200k, disaster is imminent. And it's incredibly easy to live a $500k lifestyle in NYC. But that's just how it goes.

Who said it was cheap to live there? But 200k is 16k a month. Even with taxes let's say at 35%, it's 130k with nearly 11k a month.

If I made 11k a month I'd still be pretty broke.
I'd be curious to hear your financial breakdown there.
Queens has a lot of nice areas, and so does Brooklyn, you giant baby. TNL should occupy Razor's place. Opulence, imo.

To be fair, I'm expecting him to drop about $1k on drinking, another couple k on clothing, and then probably top out around 5k with expensive food, the last 1k for innercity travel.
New York... It's rough. I lived comfortably with roommates in a house on less than $25k a year, but hey, i was in with the Chinese. We wipe our butts with 100 Yuan bills, but Mao Zedong gets the job done as well as Ben Franklin.

The general rule of thumb is 30% of gross towards housing. 4000 a month is 48000 a year - any household that makes 160k or more would be able to afford that place comfortably. So yea, $200k is plenty.
It is probably true that any household making less than 120k or so can't afford to live in Manhattan but that's how it goes. We can't always get what we want.
