The new Ozma album delivers. Track 5, "heartache vs heartbreak," is among the best songs they've ever recorded. I strongly recommend this album not only to indy rock fans, but to anyone who likes pleasure.
Anyway, the bands I've gotten into this year are The Fratellis, and I jumped late on the wagon with the Arctic Monkeys. I don't think I've read anything on TNL about AM, so if you haven't heard them, believe the hype. These kids are good. Both are Brit rock bands, but the AM songs are more music you can run from the bobbies to, where as The Fratellis are like the early sixties rock you could dance to.
Arctic Monkeys are nowt but a half-arsed Libertines ripoff. Some of their songs are pretty catchy, but I never found anything else there. Just indicative of the dumbing down of UK indiepop, imo.
The Fratellis sound like almost every other indie band around at the moment, too. I just find them all so, so dull.
Los Campasenos sorta suck, I dunno what people see in this My Morning Jacket band either. I'll have to check out Ozma and the Rentals. Mates of State are alright at times, but you can tell they're more concerned with selling more and more overproduced records rather than being a good band. They're just in it for the money and fame
Lately I've been listening to Melt Banana, the Melvins, Thee Headcoats and Times New Viking. Been looking up Sonic Youth clips on Youtube too, great live band.
Indie rock of the last few years, I think my favorite would be A-Frames' Black Forest. Short, noisy, catchy songs with mechanical, clanking percussion.
If you haven't yet you need to hear Intelligence. I think it's the percussionist from the A-frames, Lars somethin. I like that A-Frames album ok, but the first two Intelligence albums are better IMO.

I just found Times New Viking, I really dig that noisy _noisy_ pop sound they've got going on. That sound seems to be going around right now and it's a good thing. There's a few bands around seattle doing some similar stuff right now.

I'm in agreement ! If you want something similar to listen to, try The Ravonettes Chain Gang of Love.
Opinions pls. I wrote off Bright Eyes a long time ago, just didn't like his albums at all (but did like the Desaparecidos album). However this song Devil Town is really awesome. It's a remake of a Daniel Johnston song. So tell me who is more responsible for this awesomeness, Bright Eyes or Daniel Johnston? Should I give a newer Bright Eyes album a try? My current opinion of them is whiney folksy garbage, but it's open to changing i suppose.
yoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!
have none of you peeps hear dof THE JOHNSTONES?!
check em out people! they are AMAZING! cmon, at least give em a try. i guarantee you wont regret it. their deffs my fave indie band. heres their website: www.johnstonessex.com
Ok, I'm fairly confident it's just the awesomeness of Daniel Johnston, but I think Bright Eyes did an excellent job on the arrangement.
I used to LOATHE Bright Eyes, but oddly enough my wife got me to give them a second chance, and I like em just fine. He's definitely got a hard on for Elliott Smith, but his musics not half bad. As long as he's not doing the intentionally forced & warbly Billlllllllllllllboooooooooo of the Shiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrre bullshit with his voice, I'm just fine with him.
