Thread: The Indie Rock Thread!

  1. And the hits just keep on coming!

I went to the local CD shop to kill my lunch break today, & I found four used Wire albums in excellent shape. Since I worked there for a long time, the guy that runs the place sells me used cds for what they pay for them - $4! Whee! Today is definately my day!

    I got the following:

    WIRE:
    Manscape
    Ibtaba
    a bell is a cup
the Ideal cut + Snakedrill mini-album & 3 additional live tracks

the VERVE: Urban Hymns (to replace my scratched one)

PETER GABRIEL: So (My Wife is a big Gabriel fan)

The best part is, he just let me take all of that stuff & I told him I'd pay him Monday! I love having friends in the right places.

  2. Seeing Sonic Youth JM? Awesome. I'll check where they are playing, maybe they'll play the Pensacola Civic Center

Anyone got the Troubleman Mix Tape? 2cds of underground bands: Erase Errata, Melt Banana, Blonde Redhead, !!!, Radio 4, Unwound, Fucking Champs, ect.

  3. What do you guys think of Elf Power? It's a group made up of members from other Elephant 6 bands like Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, etc... I know APC likes them as well.
if ya see a sucker, cut him, don’t like perpetrators

  4. I got Elf Power's A Dream In Sound a couple years ago. I really like it. What Elephant 6 albums do you guys have? I got-
Neutral Milk Hotel- In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (my favorite E6 release). I had their previous album but sold it to a friend.
Apples In Stereo- Her Wallpaper Reverie EP
Olivia Tremor Control- Dusk At Cubist Castle

  5. Ooh!

    I dig Elephant 6!

    My collection is:
    APPLES IN STEREO:
    Funtrick Noise Maker
    Sience Farie
    Tone Soul Evolution
    Her Wallpaper reverie
    OTC:
    Dusk at Cubist Castle
    Black Foilage
    NMH:
    Aeroplane

I really love the Apples. Have any of you heard the Circulatory System? It is the guy from Olivia TC & it got pretty good reviews. I'd like some first hand impressions if you have any.

  6. The Locust AND Melt Banana!? Or. Shellac!

These are the decisions that shape our lives...

Don't forget Converge is playing there too!

I just picked up Godspeed's Raise your....

    On vinyl.

    For $4.

Speaking of Godspeed, they would rank in as the best concert I've ever seen. I caught them at the London Astoria, when I was in England a few years back. 2 1/2 hour set.

    Just magic...
    Boo, Hiss.

  7. How did you land Raise Your Fists for $4? I paid $18 or so for my vinyl copy.

So where did you see Godspeed? I didn't see a London Astoria listed here.

  10. Olivia Tremor Control- Dusk At Cubist Castle
If you like this, you should definitely check out Black Foliage. A truly great album.

Have any of you heard the Circulatory System?
Yes! The self-titled album is my favorite E6 release by far

  11. Would the Glands be considered E6? If so, then their self titled would be my favorite E6 release.

  12. Hey

I just got the new Luna album, Romantica, so here are a few impressions.

First off, if you don't like Luna, this album won't change your mind. Dean's Songwriting, Voice & Guitar playing remain true to the Luna template. If you are a fan of nice midtempo guitar pop, you should check it out. As always, the lyrics focus on romance or lack thereof. A new bass player (Britta Phillips) is a competent player & her backing vocals add a nice counterpoint to Dean's.
On the production front it was mixed & partially produced by Dave Fridman. Now I love Friedman's production but it seems like his influence on the bands he produces can be a little heavy handed. Not so here. Gene Holder does most of the production & Dave doesn't take over the band's sound. He just gives the album a much warmer feel than you normally get in a Luna album. It feels a little looser than the average Luna record. Overall, I'd rate it just behind Pup Tent for best luna album ever. Highly reccommende for any fans out there, but odds are, if you are a fan you already have this one.

    My bad. The Improv.

It was a fairly wild trip, and I can't even tell you who I did see at the Astoria...

  16. It's OK, but overall I'm very underwhelmed. Shull X is great, as are the tracks similar to it.

This is my kind of thread! I'm an Elephant 6 freak and a big shoegazer fan as well. If you like OTC, check out The Sunshine Fix. It's the other guy from OTC's (I can't remember if it's Bill or Will right now)new band. Very sunny, Beach-Boys type pop.
On the subject of shows, I've seen a ton of great ones since I've lived in Chicago/Champaign all my life. Some of the best recent shows would be: Olivia Tremor Control (twice), Apples (3 or 4 times), Stereolab (twice), Ivy & Komeda, Beulah (fantastic E6-related band-go see them if you can), Belle & Sebastian, Mercury Rev....
For shoegazer stuff, I saw almost all the big bands in the early-mid 90's: Ride, Lush, Pale Saints, MBV (twice), Slowdive, Curve, etc. By far the loudest show I ever saw was MBV opening for Dinosaur Jr. circa 1993. I couldn't hear anything for about 3 days after that show. Good times...

  18. In the worst concert issue of Chunklet someone said MBV was the worst show they ever seen. "Like standing in front of a jet engine"

    * BARF!!!!*

you literally made me ill with that remark! I would give up one kidney & probably a couple of fingers on my left hand to see that show! MBV twice! Lucky Fucker!

I also agree on dinosaur, I saw them in 97 I think & I was also deaffend for at least 3 days with ear pain for a two weeks too.

So you are from Illinois? I guess you have seen Hum about a million times huh? Poor guys, evey time I see them the opening band blows them out of the water. 1st time with Mercury Rev & 2nd time with Swervedriver!

Do/did you dig Aspera Ad Astra? They came to the town next to me about a year before they put out their first album. They played in Westlake Louisiana at this shitty punk venue, & none of the punks knew what the fuck was going on. (not that it was new to see slack looks on their faces, but I enjoyed it just the same)

Well, list your favorite shoegaze albums & maybe we can expose each other to some new stuff!

  20. So I was riding with my mom to see Road to Perdition a few days ago. I had Sonic Youth's Evol on (I've always tried to get my mom to hear most of the music I listen to, we would often drive 2 hours or so back to our old hometown so I'd put on whatever, she now loves the Pixies, Replacements, the Clash ect.), and the fourth song In The Kingdom #19 (the one about car crashes) was playing when we took an exit that was winding down from a bridge. She was going fast, the road was wet, and we began spinning, all while the car crash song was playing ("hitting the guardrail with sparks flying like pure terror for four hundred yards"). Luckily no one was behind us, and she is a good driver, heh.

    Christ, that must've been fun

    Anyway, bump bump.

  22. Err, obviously I'm a Pavement fan, although I'm not a huge fan of SM's solo stuff. I do like Preston School of Industry. Mainly I listen to noise rock crap, like Mogwai, Tortoise, Do Make Say Think, etc. I find Godspeed to be incredibly boring, though. I also like any band associated with Slint. That includes June of 44, Coctails, Rachel's, King Kong, and my favorite band, Shipping News (now known as RMSN). I'm into the country/indie rock scene too, artists like Smog, Cat Power, Silver Jews, and Palace.

  23. Hey

    Green, that is Fookin crazy!

Umm, I got some new albums, so here goes.

    the Flaming Lips -Yoshimi
I dig the album, but I can see where some of the reviewers are coming from. I certainly didn't expect an electro pop album, but you can't argue with the quality of the album. It just isn't Soft Bulettin 2.

    Pretty Girls Make Graves
Damn these guys rock. Decent female vocal W/backing male vocals. Great guitar work with two guitars working off of each other so well it isn't even funny. Solid bass & drumming With subltle keyboards & programming throughout. Reccommended!

Ooohh I can't wait! I'm gonna go see Sonic Youth & Mary Timony this Saturday. Is anyone else here going to try to catch this show when it hits other areas?

    JM

  24. Shows coming to my area:
The Ghost: Their album "This Is A Hospital" was produced by Steve Albini, so I'm actually quite surprised that they're going to be here.

And that's it until October, when Kool & The Gang will be here

    ...I hate Toledo.

  25. I
    friggin
    missed
RJD2, Lif, Aesop Rock and EL-P. I could have seen them Friday, but I only found out a day before, and I could only go if my friend was going, and he had to work (ironically, so he could get time off to see Tool...). Enon is playing there too this Friday, but no luck there either. Well, maybe I'll get to see Melt Banana in November. Whats a good Melt Banana album? The only MB song I've ever heard was a short song called We Love Choco Pa.
    pwned by Ivan

  26. Basically all Melt Banana songs are short. They are pretty much the Japanese Locust. Or else The Locust is the American Melt Banana. Either way is fine .

As for that Def Jux show, at least take comfort in knowing the Aesop Rock probably wasn't there. He's been sick, coughing up blood or something.
    God is Rome

  27. Built to Spill, Pavement, and Neutral Milk Hotel are the three rock bands I listen to the most (Neutral Milk Hotel I listen to mainly because my girlfriend loves the stuff, but I like it too). The greatness of each of those three bands has made me sad sometimes, just unbelievable. Guided by Voices is pretty great, Sonic Youth, Silver Jews, Sebadoh.

I like the one Sentridoh CD I have way more than any of the Sebadoh stuff, though. I'm not really that emotional of a guy, but the stuff on the Sentridoh CD can just kill me sometimes.

I like Wire a lot, that's older stuff, though. Husker Du is more punk, but they're good. Dinosaur Jr. Plus, the Pixies, there's a lot of good stuff. Minutemen.

I like really ultra-stripped down music, basically, so, the Strokes, White Stripes, those bands make me really happy (why I like Built to Spill so much I'll never understand, half-way arena rock). I can't believe the White Stripes are popular now, it's great.

Can anyone tell me why Built to Spill isn't as big as Pearl Jam or some other band like that? The music, to me, seems so accessible, and it seems like it'd sound perfect over huge loudspeakers in front of 10000 people.

Ha true, he wasn't at the show my friend went to in Ohio. When the whole crew was up on stage he yelled "where the fuck is Aesop" to which ELP replies with "he's in the van. get the fuck outa here and go see him" followed by "go out and swallow his semen" by Copywrite.

  29. Built to Spill came way too late to get popular, and I doubt they warmed up to getting big. Their major label release came around 98, so yeah, way too late. Doug's voice is too sweet, and they aren't aggressive enough to get over with modern rock radio imo.

  30. Hey Stone! Good to see you in here again.

I never posted my impressions of the Soinc Youth show, did I?

Well, Tim Prudhome was pretty take it or leave it, didn't leave a big impression on me either way.

Mary Timony was pretty good, but I don't have either of her Solo alblums, so I wasn't very familliar with the material.

SY was fucking great! the had more energy than alot of punk bands I've seen! They didn't play much old stuff, but opened with Tom Violence, which I thought was a nice move. They played the entire new album, which is probably their best since dirty. They were great and their performance totally met up to my expectations.

The venue, on the other hand, Sucked ass. (tipatina's uptown) It was a sweat box, with very little ventilation & they didn't turn on the damn fans. The place was packed & it was pretty miserable. Honestly, I remember more about how hot I was than the actual show. My wife almost passed out, so we left after the encore, I don't know if they did anymore after that, but I had had enough of that place.
