Thread: The Indie Rock Thread!

  1. I had that problem for a long time as well Frog. Mainly what I did to get into more bands was get music from off of my friends who got it from somewhere. The amount of bands and music I have computer has tripled since I've gotten to college because I met a guy who shares all of his albums over the network. So I've got a huge cache of different bands and types of music to listen to now. It's pretty nice.

Well I'm always willing to give lists of recommendations, so PM me if you want one.

You can also look back through this thread, there are several posts that I have made that include lists made to others, in fact my second post on the previous page has a lot of classic early to mid 90's indie rock, alot of unquestionably good (IMO . ) music.

  3. Just got "IV" by the Fucking Champs. Wanted to remind everyone of how cool this album is and wanted to get slapped for taking so long to actually get it.

  5. i love saetia

  6. Yeah I think they're a great band but friend of mine was telling me the other night how big of a mistake it was putting them in my show. He mainly thought this because he really really hates Saetia.

I think they're pretty good though, not my favorite band of the genre but good nonetheless.

One of the best rock songs this year for sure.
I thought you were gay.... i guess not.

  8. WCNU is still having computer challenges. We are working with IT to
    get these
resolved, but we are not broadcasting this week. An e-mail will be
    sent to
inform DJs when the station is back on the air. I apologize for any
confustion or misinformation on this subject.
    Program Director, WCNU
    Wonderful.

As for Pretty Girls Make Graves, HA I'M SEEING THEM SATURDAY NIGHT AT UVA!

  9. I didn't see either of these albums mentioned anywhere in the thread, so I thought I'd throw them out there as recommendations for any shoegazer fans:
    Manitoba - Up In Flames
Sweet Trip - Velocity : Design : Comfort
Both are from 2003 and both mix the classic shoegazer-type aesthetic with electronic elements to great effect. Highly recommended.

A couple other cool things I've picked up recently that may be of interest to some here:
Complete Recordings by Black Tambourine - can be compared to early Jesus & Mary Chain (think a less abrasive Psychocandy) but with a female singer. Members of this band went on to form the early-90's indie band Velocity Girl.

The Aislers Set - saw them open for the Shins recently and they were great. Very cool and catchy pop/punk, also with a female singer. "The Last Match" is their best, but I like all three of their albums a lot.

  10. LAVISH GREEN!!!

Awesome music, rock with some dub thrown in for good measure...cool dudes to. Saw em on Saturday.

Warsaw is another one of my indie favs.

  11. Listened to Pretty Girls Make Graves album. Not impressed.

And The Wrens are playing here on Friday, free show. I checked out one of their albums today, pretty good, I can see it growing on me.

I will totally agree with you on Manitoba. That was pretty high on my top 10 list for last year. I will keep an eye out for Sweet Trip, it sounds like my cup of tea.

I haven't picked up too much stuff lately, the most recent purchase was Beulah - Yoko. "A man like me" is such a great song. Highly reccommended for indie pop fans.

Is the new Xiu Xiu album brilliant or what? Jamie totally took it up another notch with this one.

CRAB PEOPLE!!!! CRAB PEOPLE!!!! TASTE LIKE CRAB, TALK LIKE PEOPLE!!!

  16. Yeah, Fabulous Muscles is amazing. I had only recently heard their last one, and not all of the songs were strong. Some were amazing...but on the knew one the whole thing is just mind blowing.

  17. Fabulous Muscles is probably Jamie Stewart's best, most complete record yet. Other Xiu Xiu albums/EPs had more of an instant accessability with me than their latest, but after repeated listens, his lyrical work has eclipsed the jarring noise-rock that first got me interested in the band with Knife Play and A Promise.

  18. I like the Pitchfork interview with him about his favorite singers, especially about Morrisey and Brian Farrey.
    pwned by Ivan

  19. For any My Bloody Valentine fans, I heartily recommend the debut album by the Japanese Shoegaze duo Hartfield, released in the USA on Feb. 10th 2004 by Clairecords. Check out their webpage at www.hartfieldweb.com to listen to some songs samples. You'll be pleasantly surprised! It's a really great album.

  20. Just a little update on my radio show, because I have no other outlet. We're the highest rated show at the school (which is only 40 listeners, but the second to us is 23 so... yeah), and we're going to tryyy to get maybe an interview with someone, perhaps Claudo Sanchez (That's for you bbobb) but it just seems unlikely. On the other hand, our competition is another indie show that is currently working to get Mae on their show, so anything's possible I guess.

But listen tonight, it should be a pretty good show.

    {/desperate plea}

i bought this today, but i ended up not really getting into it. I listened to a couple of the songs on the website and developed the wrong expectations. I really like the SNES quality to a couple of them, but i can't stand the Oberst like vocals. Like a lot of electronic based albums it has a hollow unfullfilling sound (although production is otherwise very good). This album won't be entering my current rotation. (and i'm out $15 )

    the good - tracks 1,7,9
the rest i can do without.

the more i think about it the more i think i can say that i no longer like what has become known as "indie rock". It seems like now it's all about sounding artsier than everyone else at the cost of melody.

  22. Heh, you sound like a friend of mine who really likes Xiu Xiu. I can't get into them though, a bit too out there for me.

  23. I dont know if indie is really about soundy artsie now. I mean, there is definetly people doing stuff in that vein, but a lot of bands are diving back to a really past gone sound, back to when it really was all about melody. I like those bands.

Xiu Xiu really doesnt fit into either of those categories, to me at least. Not sure if I would compare his voice to Oberst though...its really way more unique. What do you think about song #2 though?

I guess the wierd thing about Xiu Xiu is either you just get it or dont. For me it just clicks, unlike some music that I sometimes I have to really work at to enjoy, but I dont for em. Dunno....

#2 is ok. It's definatly where i first started thinking Connor Oberst. That's the thing though, even the songs that aren't objectionable are ruined for me by the vocals. It's definatly something that won't bother everyone, I just find the style particularly grating. Then you have songs like #5, that potentially ruin whole albums. He's casting stereotyped aspersions at people he doesn't know that BOUGHT HIS ALBUM. At least give your listeners some credit. It's not even a song, it's him talking over vague feedback, aka artsy SHIT.

If #9 weren't about clowns it would be my favorite on the album. But goddamnit i fucking HATE clowns.

  25. Wow...how have I never listened to that song...if you want to call it that at all.

I agree...that sucks, I just choose to ignore as if it never even happened

  26. Did anyone listen to last year's Shins album "Chutes too Narrow"? What a fantastic CD!
I thought you were gay.... i guess not.

  27. #177
Everyone seems to love the Shins. I don't, really. Except for a few songs.
