You have a point in that you nailed the fact that I do like traditional rock most of all. Give me some diesel guitars and lyrics about how shitty women are and Im set for life.Originally Posted by Punky Skunk

Music can be experimental and great... you dont need to wrap it around layers of ugly dissonance that makes my brain scream in anguish and shitty nonsensical lyrics for it to be experimental. Just look at the better Flaming Lips stuff, or even Interpol.
I have the promo for the new Sonic Youth album, Sonic Nurse, and I must say that it is absolutely spectacular. Easily their best album since "Washing Machine"... maybe even since "Dirty" (which is probably my favorite SY album). It successfully combines some really wicked hooks/melodies, the pop sensibility of some of their stuff, as well as the dissonance/ noise-rock SY has become known for. Excellent record, blows "Murray Street" out of the water (and I quite liked "Murray Street"). Kim Gordon owns this album... her 4 songs are the best.
Standout Tracks: Pattern Recognition, I Love You Golden Blue, Peace Attack, Unmade Bed, Kim Gordon and the Arthur Doyle Handcream
Can't wait until June 9th...

Washing Machine was junk. I liked it upon first listen but it got crappier with each listen.
Let's be real, Murray Street was their first good album since Dirty.
and Ive heard two tracks off Sonic Nurse: Unmade Bed is excellent but Pattern Recognition, not so much.
Pattern Recognition >>> all.
YOU'RE THE ONE!!!!!!

In other news, Denali has announced that they are breaking up, according to the Jade Tree website. Kinda sucks considering I was supposed to see them next Friday with Cursive.
Yeah...I agree. Not sure if I am going to even go now. Damn you Denali..

Too bad I bought my ticket last night, goddamnit.
They aren't even finishing their current tour? Assholes.
I thought you were gay.... i guess not.
Yeah really, they were good live when I saw them in Richmond like a month ago, I would have liked to have seen the lead singer be hot again.
The re-release of Reggie and the Full Effect's album came out yesterday, it has 7 new tracks on it to boot. I went to pick it up at Best Buy and they didn't have it, so that led to me driving to several stores with none of them having it. I eventually found it at Hot Topic where it was priced at $17. So I didn't get it, I don't like paying more than $13 for an album, that and I only want it for seven songs.
Which album was re-released? Greatest Hits? So long as it isnb't Under the TreyOriginally Posted by Mr-K

Does anyone out there like Lenola??? If so check out Garden State, it's a break off from Lenola since they broke up after sharks and flames. You can sample mp3s at www.gardenstatetheband.com. Enjoy.
This thread should be bumped before it gets locked or something bad like that. Oh yeah... Summer in Abaddon was the best indie rock release of the year. Nothing else new has really struck my fancy lately, but indie rock is still tops in my book. I've been mostly digging through 90s stuff. Especially bountiful were the Unwound and Six Finger Satellite oeuvres.
Unwound - indie rock band of the 90s.
Law of Ruins - indie rock album of the 90s.
Feel free to contest.

Everybody needs to check out Bobby Bare Jr.'s Young Criminal Starvation League release "From the End of Your Leash"

I'm not convinced. You will have to describe.
I almost forgot to ask the most important question: does anyone know of any good indie rock MP3 blogs? 90s-present.
Lately, I've really gotten into Mono. Their new CD just came out in October (Walking Cloud and Deep Red Sky, Flag Fluttered and the Sun Shined) and it's the best post-rock album yet. It has definently raised the bar for all future post-rock releases.
Also been listening to a lot of Minus the Bear (their new EP is amazing). Really great stuff.
Anyone listen to The Causey Way? It's a real shame they broke up.
This funny genre peaked in the 90s. And how.Originally Posted by Interpol
What does it sound like? Please tell me it does not sound like Mogwai or GYBE.
It definently has more of an Explosions In the Sky feel to it, more from Those Who Tell the Truth... than The Earth Is A Dead Cold Place, but it's more atmospheric and in a way, more beautiful.Originally Posted by Punky Skunk
Well, Bobby Bare Jr. is the son of a pretty famous country music artist, Bobby Bare Sr. So there is definetly country influences mixed in with farely straight up indie rock. It is pretty hard to describe other than straight up good rock music. I would post an MP3 but cannot access my webspace right now.Originally Posted by Punky Skunk

I'm not sure if I hear indie rock, although what does indie rock sound like anyways. Definitely hear the country, which I'm definitely biased against. For that reason I can't say it's bad, but the singer kind of reminded me of Three Doors Down.Originally Posted by Mman
Yeah, I just heard some samples at allmusic. 30 seconds, but I could still get a strong EITS vibe from Halcyon (Beautiful Days) and others. Has that catatonically pleasant/happy EITS sound that I dislike, so I'm obviously biased against that. The problem with post-rock is that it's almost all lost its sense of edginess or identity. Same label as EITS, title is Godspeed length. It's been redefined as this specific instrumental rock sound...It definently has more of an Explosions In the Sky feel to it, more from Those Who Tell the Truth... than The Earth Is A Dead Cold Place, but it's more atmospheric and in a way, more beautiful.
You have to be kidding me? 3 Doors Down? And why are you biased against country music. Thats just dumb.Originally Posted by Punky Skunk
As far as what indie rock sounds like, that is pretty simple. It can cover a huge variety of sounds, as can just "rock". The main difference between the two is that indie rock usually is much more raw, and for a lack of a better word, "old school" sounding as opposed to what you would hear on your local rock station. I know it is cool and be all against classifications or whatever, but it is a valid description.

Biased against country - 'cause that's how my ears work. I don't like the sounds much. As for the definition of indie rock, I think it's more an umbrella than a proper descriptor. Not trying to be an ass, just saying.

You know, I'm going to utilize this thread to answer a question that has been plaguing me for a long time.
How the hell do you pronounce Joy Division's album "Closer" ?
Is it "closer" as in coming nearer or "closer" as in something that closes an object like a door or a concert set.
I am stupid. And I want to know.
The Littlest Man Band.
http://littlestman.dmusic.com/
"Starring" Scott Kloepfenstein and Dan Reagan from Reel Big Fish. It's not ska.
...frankly, I'm not sure what it is, actually. It sounds nice, though.

McLusky and Unicorns both are over now.
They were OK.Who the living fuck ever cared about this band but trendy-ass fucking poseur dooshes...way to read your Pitchfork every morning, cunts.
A band can be defined as an "Indie rock" band by simply defining the term and applying that criteria to the band. Indie is used to define the bands label affiliation. Indie = short for independent. I think this term got loosely thrown around back in the early to mid 90's when there was a sound associated with the larger indie labels of the day like Matador. Bands that had this sort of sound got clumped into the "indie rock" description. Just goes to show that people absolutely HAVE to classify everything.Originally Posted by Punky Skunk
