Thread: The Indie Rock Thread!

  1. The Indie Rock Thread!

    Hey

I'd like this to be a thread for all the indie fans here on the boards. I know there are a few, so lets hear it. Recent purchases, Favorite bands, New discoveries or maybe older bands no one eles has heard of.

Also if anyone has any questions about any of the music in the thread, I'm sure we would be glad to answer any questions.

I guess I'll start out with a list of my favorite bands.

    My bloody Valentine
    Swervedriver
    Rollerskate Skinny
    Built To Spill
    Lilys
    Sebadoh (Freed man - Bakesale)
    Sonic Youth
    Modest Mouse
    Caustic resin

    Thats all for now.

    JM

  2. Wooooooo! This is my kinda thread. Would you be so kind, JM, to list all your albums on that one thread about cd collections (forgot its name, its on the first page I think)? Lets see, Loveless is such a great album, how does there other stuff compare? You know that K. Shields is working with Primal Scream? He produced two tracks off of Xtrmntr, and played guitar on Accelorator (which is intense). Xtrmntr is a good album too, political psychedelic dance music. Last I heard he is still working on a new My Bloody Valentine album. Swervedriver, I've heard a little about them, they are a guitar driven band like MBV, right? What kind of band is Rollerskate Skinny? Also, is that the band Kid Silver used to be in? Built to Spill is one of the best bands around today. Doug is a guitar god, I have an mp3 of them covering Free Bird, and at the end Doug is thanking everyone and he doens't sound like he's broke a sweat or anything. Lilys, who are they? Oh Inverted World, is that there album? Sebadoh is great, III is my favorite, do you know where Eric Gaffney is? The Folk Implosion's (Lou's electronic pop group) One Part Lullabye is a good album, if you like Lou's vocals you'd probably dig it. Sonic Youth is one of my all time favorite groups. Modest Mouse's Lonesome Crowded West was probably the FIRST indie rock album I ever bought (back in 98). I was obsessed with that album at the time, and bought up everything they did pretty much (I've recently sold it all except Lonesome to a friend). Coustic Resin, I have the ep they did with Built to Spill. I know the lead singer used to be in Built to Spill.
Hmmmm, I reccomend Dinosaur Jr.'s Your Living All Over Me. You seem to like guitar bands, and Dinosaur was one the best. Lou Barlow played bass with them, and alot of Sebadoh's III songs are about Dinosaur's frontman (J. Mascis), especially Freed Pig. Lou even has a Sebadohish song on the album. But yeah, you won't find many guitar bands that can best Dinosaur Jr. outside of MVB and Sonic Youth (Lee Ranaldo is on Living, shouting on one song). THE greatest indie band (or the band that best personafied indie), and the one group people connect with indie is Pavement. I'm sure you've heard of them. Slanted and Enchanted, Crooked Rain Crooked Rain, and Brighten the Corners are three of the best albums from the last decade. If you like indie rock, then Slanted is probably the one I'd reccomend hightest.
Allright people, lets make this thread TWICE as big as the metal thread!

JM, you know how to drag me back in!

My Bloody Valentine is amazing, my favorites being Loveless and Ecstasy and Wine.
Supercollider is another favorite in the shoegaze vein of things.

Hot Snakes are awesome, but I haven't heard their new one. How does it stack up to Automatic Midnight?

On the slightly quieter side, Joel R.L. Phelps (of Silkworm fame) is rulin'. Blackbird is one of my favorite records ever.

For drinking songs, nothing beats Frog Eyes.

And I'm sure a lot of you like the Guided By Voices.

    Motor Away!

  6. I read up on Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, and Pitchfork at Amazon. Who made the best record between the three?

Guided by Voices? "When you motor away, beyond the once red lips...".

I downloaded a song off of Silkworm new album, and I really like it. What other Silkworm stuff do you reccomend? I also got some mp3s of the Crust Brothers (members of Silkworm plus Stephen Malkmus), doing alot of cover songs for some forest benefit.

Heh, I only discovered Modest Mouse by accident. Olly wears a Modest Mouse shirt in the Sifl & Olly: The Lost Episodes DVD and I kept trying to figure out what the hell it was. Lo and behold, its an indie rock band.

  8. Where have you seen indie rock on tv and movies and such? There was a Pavement poster, a Belle and Sebastian song, and a more stuff in High Fidelity. There was an episode of Mr. Show where David had a Creeper Lagoon shirt on. There was an episode of Upright Citizens Brigade where someone had a Yo La Tengo shirt. This movie called Safe Men had a scene where everyone danced to SY's Kool Thing.

  9. Hey

Hi Green, I'm not gonna list all my albums, Ive got around 650 CDs, 200 albums & 100 or so 45s. Way too much typing for me. I can't answer all of your questions right now, but I'll get some.

I dig Valentine stuff from Isn't Anything up to present day. If you dig loveless, find the Glider EP & Tremelo Ep, They have more Loveless era stuff on them.

Swervedriver is the shit, plain & simple. Mezcal Head is, IMO, the best british rock album of the 90's. Maybe best rock album of the 90's period.

BTS is just lovely. Doug is my favorite american songwriter. I saw them in Houston last year & they played Freebird as their last song. They had Bret Netson from Caustic resin & the guitar player from the delusions onstage for a triple guitar attack! That show was worth the 6 year wait to see them.

I love Dinosaur Jr. & have been listening to them for about 9 years now. I also dig the older Sebadoh stuff, I have damn near every album, ep & 7" they have ever put out. I even have The Freed Man & Weed Forestin on vinyl. They took those albums & cut off half the songs on each & combined them to make The Freed Weed CD.

The Lilys are a great band sometimes, decent at other times. Back in the Mid 90's they were a stunning Shoegaze band, but have moved on to a more 60's pop sound, as so many gazers seem to do. See if you can find Eccsame the Photon Band, it is their best album & one of my top 5 albums of all time. Good luck though, it is quite out of print. =(
The album you were thinking of is Oh Inverted World by the Shins. It is really nice, & I reccommend picking it up.

Rollerskate Skinny is one of the most criminaly overlooked bands ever. It is the same guy from Kid Silver, but the Album Horse drawn Wishes is WAY better than the Kid Silver album. RUN out & find this CD! Once you get it, spend about the next 3 months with quality headphones on. I have been listening to that album regularly for 5 years & I still find new sounds all the time. It is my #3 album of all time.

Outo of Drive Like Jehu & Hot Snakes, I'd say the best album is Yank Crime by Jehu. Rick Froberg is my favorite screamer! that album rocks in all the right ways. Kinda like math rock before there was math rock, but with hariy Nuts, if you know what I mean.

That is pretty much all I have time for now, If you have any questions about Shoegaze music, British indie stuff, or Northwestern Indy, (BTS, Modest Mouse, etc.) just ask, I have allocated at least 80% of my brain towards useless music trivia.

Oh! Hey Cutty! I still haven't heard of a new Hot Snakes album since Automatic Midnight, what is it called?

  10. Ichabod? Could that be my old pal JackSkellington?

If so, how the hell have you been doing?

    JM

  11. Thanks for the reccomendations JM. You seen Built to Spill, you're a bastard! I have a friend who likes Built to Spill too, and actually went to Texas the same week of that show. Damnit all, we knew about the show, we should have went, I can't remember why we didn't. I've seen a bit of the video the Shins made for a recent song, during the video they recreat the cover of Slint's Spiderland, and Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime. JM, do you have Idlewild's 100 Broken Windows?

    Just fine, you?

The new Hot Snakes record is called Suicide Invoice, and it stacks up very well to Automatic Midnight
    God is Rome

  14. And while I'm still here: Has anyone heard the new Clinic album? How is it compared to Internal Wrangler?
    God is Rome

  15. Hey Ickybod!

The new clinic is pretty cool from what I heard, which honestly I didn't hear too much of.

Yeah, I have 100 broken windows. I dig it.

Green, go get Dismemberment Plan's CHANGE, damn near the best album of 2001.

    JM

We should start a list of what shows we have seen.

  16. Here's my list:

Ickybod takes the lead with 10 Points! =)

Cutty, you are a bastard for living somewhere that gets good shows.

I had to drive at least 2 hours for every show listed. =(

When did you see the Lilys?

Ichabod, I just went to the local music store to get the new Sonic Youth (wich is pretty fuckin rad) & they got a promo of the new Clinic! I love free albums! I was actually going to order it there today! What a happy conicidence! I'll give impressions of both albums once I give them both a couple of spins.

It was only about 2 years ago that I saw Lilys, so it was in their 60s phase. I hadn't heard any of their material post-Eccsame, so the show was a big disappointment for me.

Vancouver sucks for shows now. Three good rock venues have turned into nightclubs, so now we only get the really big shows, and the really little shows. I haven't gone out much at all lately.

  22. Hey

here are some impressions of my two newest aquisitions.

    Clinic - Walking with Thee
I really like it, but not as much as Internal wrangler. This one seems to be a tad more polished. More electronics & odd precussion going on. On the whole, it is awesome & keeps up the overall quality of their sound. It's nice to see that they are consistent, I was afraid they would be a one hitter.

    Sonic Youth - Murray St.
First let me explain that I REALLY don't like their self indulgent wankfest "Experimental" albums. I just don't have time for that shit. I have really missed the SY that wrote songs, as bent as they were. Sister is easily my favorite SY album, & to say that I have been disenchanted with them as of late wouldn't be an overstatement. That said, the new album is a return to form! Real songs! Melodies! Vocals! It's is all here & it is as good as it has been since Daydream Nation or Sister. It has a nice blend of pop songwriting & the wonderful feedback of the earlier albums. Even better, Kim only sings on two of the songs. Now take into account that it is impossible to really absorb an album on two listens, but hey, if it sounds this good on the first couple of spins, it will only get better the deeper you get into it.

Well, there it is. I know that this could go into the recent purchases thread, but I made this thread with everything in mind.

    Recent purchases
    Top 10 artists
    Current favorites
Discussion of such & such indie band in particular
All of that with Indie in mind.
    ect.

  23. Thanks for the impressions . I'm happy to hear about the Sonic Youth record, I was afraid that another NYC Ghosts & Flowers was on the way...
    God is Rome

  24. And speaking of the Talking Heads: I just found a free vinyl copy of Remain In Light among a stack of old records, along with a live album. Perfect condition, too.
    God is Rome

  25. heh

I got my vinyl copy of Remain for $.99 at a flea market. In perfect condish too.

let's list our rarest finds & best deals we have found.

my favs aren't too rare, but are:
Swervedriver 12" singles for Rave Down, The Duel, & Never Lose that feeling.

A 3 cd bootleg set of every Swervedriver B-side ever released.

MBV - Isn't Anything & Loveless on Vinyl, & You made me realise
    EP

Built to Spill - Promo only Clear vinyl 7" for Untrustable with jukebox insert.

All natural Lemon & Lime Flavors - their first album, first pressing. Although it was recently re-released with bonus tracks, for a long time there were only about 250 copies pressed.

Sebadoh - Gimmie Indie Rock & Soul & Fire 7"s

    That's all for now.

    JM

  26. Let's see... I got the Joy Division box set for 7 bucks. I have no idea why it was so cheap, it was on the Amazon.com marketplace. That's really the only great deal I have found. I did find some other good records with Remain In Light, though, including Miles Davis' Bitches Brew and a Devo record that I can't recall the tile of.
    God is Rome

  27. Seething anger. That is all I feel towards you people who've seen all these great bands. Ichabod, you got the JD box for $7...I'm speachless. You guys who think that seeing dozens of great bands isn't impressive should consider this: the only indie rock show I've seen was Mike Watt a month ago. Two shit openers, and you couldn't really make out what Mike was playing due to the organ drowning everything out in a wall of sound. Guess it didn't matter, I don't know any of his songs anyways. I did make out a Minutemen song (the one on DNOTD about Mike, "his body is a skeleten"), and a Television song at the end, though. I got Walking With Thee, Clinic's new one. Its a good album, but not up to Internal Wrangler. It seems a few of the songs go about at the same pace, and there isn't much on it that wans't on Internal Wrangler (the speedy punk song, a slow song about war that is similiar to the last song on Internal). Its a very good album, though, I'd reccomend it.
    Guess this lyric:
Candles are melting without being lit
Knocked upside the head without even being hit

I checked that out, there's a band playing called Super Smash Brothers!
!!!, The Coup, Adult, and DJ Spooky are playing there, cool. I've heard a song by !!!, I like it allright (funk music). Never heard any Adult myself, but I've read they're a good electro group. I have albums by The Coup and DJ Spooky, they're both really good. The Coup is really political, though.

  30. WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

I just got tickets to go see SONIC YOUTH in New Orleans at Tipatina's on August 3rd!!! FUCK YEAH!

They were one of the biggies that I had never seen. I have been listening to them since 9th fucking grade! 9 damn years!

The show is on a Saturday too! I can't go to shows on weekdays without taking vacation days. The Gods are smiling upon me!

BTW Go buy the new SY album. Odds are, you won't be dissapointed! Great mix of noise & songcraft!

    Ohhhhh, I can't tell you how stoked I am! .... I just said stoked didn't I?
