Thread: Please help a picky fan select some new titles

  1. Please help a picky fan select some new titles

I dig anime, but I tend to watch it in bunches. As in every few years.

I picked up Vexille a couple weeks ago - the first anime I'd bought in three years - and loved it, and after following that with Paprika and 5 Centimeters Per Second (both of which I adored), I think I'm fully back in the anime swing.

I'd really appreciate some help tracking down some new stuff to watch. I gravitate towards more mature, realistic, dark, SF-based anime. Favorite series are Cowboy Bebop, Lain, Boogiepop Phantom, Gasaraki, and Texhnolyze, and I've already seen most of the heavies (series and features like Eva, Trigun, Akira, Miyazaki, etc.).

Here's a small list of potentials I've gathered already:

Kino's Journey (this sounds right up my alley)
    Ergo Proxy (so does this)
    GITS SAC / 2nd Gig
    Dead Leaves
    FLCL
    Paranoia Agent
The other two by Shinkai (the exact names escape me)
    Tokyo Godfathers
    Millennium Actress
    Samurai Champloo

I would most appreciate any suggestions or comments. I've got a six-week break between semesters - the perfect opportunity to catch up. Thanks very much!

  2. I loved Kino's Journey.
    I hated Ergo Proxy.
I also liked Noir if you haven't seen that.

  3. Noir is interesting to me, yes.
Why'd you hate Ergo Proxy? Sounds great on paper, and the clips I've seen have been gorgeous.....

    Satoshi Kon: 1963-2010

  4. It looks great, no denying that.
After third time of me trying to watch it and me falling asleep, I gave up.

  5. Heh, I've heard it's not action-packed. I've also heard the story really takes off during the second disc, but if it takes a while to get started, that's certainly not a plus. I don't mind slow-moving anime as long as it's interesting, and the eye candy might help....

Glad to hear you liked Kino though. I'm quite drawn to it, I must admit, as the structure and premise really intrigue me.

  6. Looks like you dig the same stuff as I do:

Ergo Proxy (so does this) - this is cool, you will dig it, has a texhnolyze feel
GITS SAC / 2nd Gig - amazing definitely watch
Paranoia Agent - more amazing stuff, the music is kinda grating though
    Tokyo Godfathers - awesome
    Millennium Actress - awesome
Samurai Champloo - badass, if you liked bebop this is next best thing

havent seen the rest of your list

    you might also try

Mushi-shi - best anime in a long time
Requiem from the Darkness - cool horror/adult theme
    Afro Samurai
    Blood the Last Vampire/Blood

Havent watched yet, but have them on the way:

    Le Chevalier d'eon
    Kurau

    I really enjoyed Kino's Journey.

Tokyo Godfather's is one of the best anime movies ever made.

What I've seen of Mushi-shi has been amazing.

  8. Tekkonkinkreet is straight up excellent. It's on Blue-ray and it has a soundtrack by Plaid. One of the best animes I have seen in years.
