Anyone playing Galaxy on Fire 2? I wasn't a huge fan of the first but goddamn if they haven't gone all out for the sequel. The story missions are a bit so-so, but once you're done with the campaign you have free reign in a sandbox universe. Mining, trading organs on the black market, smuggling people/drugs/weapons, fighting pirates, fighting the law, playing the markets between systems - it's really got everything. You can of course ignore the story once you're able to travel to other systems, but I'm finding some of the story quest rewards are worth the sometime terrible voice acting.
The extent to which you can customise your ship is pretty amazing. Each ship (of which there are many) has different slots for primary weapons, secondary weapons and equipment. So your starting ship you can load out with one primary, secondary and 3 pieces of equipment (generally a mining drill, scanner, and some sort of shield. You'll find blackmarket traders in the various space stations who will offer you one-off deals on new blueprints for equipment, or you can salvage tech from defeated enemies (if you have a tractor beam installed!).
The combat is satisfying too. I was getting my arse kicked by pirates until I saved up enough cash to get a homing laser blob shooting thing, and now I'm out dog fighting like a pro. It's so goddamn great.
It also has a neat feature where you can pause the game and rotate the camera to take stills. Here's some I took just now;
