It is illegal, sure, but in the current state of the industry, I don't feel like it is in any way, shape or form "wrong".
For some people, downloading music is like a vegetarian not eating meat. Its unethical to support the big labels.
You know what's flat out wrong? This twisted version of copyright law that has been created by the music and movie companies through their money spent in congress. They have destroyed fair use, they have destroyed the public domain. Because of their actions large parts of our culture are being lost, and new cultural growth is being stunted.
DLing music isn't shit, what these companies are doing, what we are allowing these companies to do is indefensible.

It's fine to not support the big labels, but then you can't listen to the music they put out either. That's like saying you're a vegetarian unless someone else is buying dinner.
I don't think the big labels are a good thing, I'm just saying Dl'ing someone's music is flat out wrong. Don't try to act like you're some kind of modern day Robin Hood "fighting the good fight" bullshit. It's stealing whether you like it or not. Personally, I'm ok with being a thief. I've been a thief since I was about 5 years old and stole magazines from the grocery store. I steal to this day. I'm at peace with it.

The only reasons I don't like the big labels is because they take more money from artists and me than should be allowed.
But at this point, if you sign to a major then you deserve what you get.

A large percentage of film and music from the 20th century are being lost because of their destruction of the public domain. There's a lot of music and movies that are sitting around with their masters deteriorating at a fast rate (film is the largest problem here obviously as film stock deteriorates rather quickly). Because of what has been done to copyright, people aren't willing to go in and digitalize/save them because it's not always known for sure who the copyright holder is more often then not.
Part of the design of copyright was to create a public domain. Copyright is supposed to ensure that the author of works gets some compensation for his work, but also ensure that the works become public property after a set amount of time to allow for culture to continue to grow and expand. Music for example has ALWAYS involved people using bits and pieces of other people's work to create something new. But this growth is being stunted. Our culture is being both lost and stunted in these ways, and we're letting the huge corporations do this to us.
Also as for the stealing thing. Yes, it is illegal and yes it is a form of stealing in a way. I don't claim to be a modern day robin hood in anyway, but it is not even remotely the same as stealing physical objects from a store.

As a musician I don't make the distinction. If someone were to DL a record of mine and say so in front of me there'd be a fight. You are not entitled to anything you enjoy just because it's out there. I put hard work into the things I make and if I decide I want to sell it for x amount of money and you just take it, I'm going to be justifiably pissed the fuck off.it is not even remotely the same as stealing physical objects from a store.

It is a very serious issue, not just some alarmist shit.
But the difference is in the loss of sale. I do understand how it could piss you off if someone were to download your stuff, BUT odds are strong that someone who does download it wasn't going to but it in the first place, so there was no actual loss of sale or property.As a musician I don't make the distinction. I completely understand where you're coming from, but there is a distinct difference between breaking copyright law and actually stealing physical objects.
