    Its a joke. Didn't he say something along the lines of making one's constituents happy so you get reelected? You're a constituents when you vote or write them.

    Like it or not, but that is kind of how it should be. They should do what you think is right. Not what they think is right. Some of those guys might like it if their religion became the national one. You probably don't want that. What should they do? Make the people that vote for them happy or do what they personally think it right?

    You guys are making the assumption that your version of right is the ultimate form of right and that people fighting for what is right will automatically agree with you.


    The real problem in the US is that money talks and elected officials listen more to the people that fund their campaigns than the people that vote for them. They see it more of an issue of marketing than making the most voters happy.

    Hard to take The Daily Show seriously as political commentary.     its the same preventive legislation that people apply to guns. Taking away something that a lot of people like under the assumption that it will stop a few outliers.

I think the point of that Daily Show segment is that the officials buckle when up against a strong lobby, where they make choices based on the fear of a lobby swaying the public against them in their future reelection versus voting what the public currently is in favor of (And IIRC a pretty big majority of the public was for the background checks, right?).
