Legally owned guns do not cause much if any devastation. The majority of them either sit in some old man's junk room closet for months if not years at a time, or they are primarily used for shooting paper targets or hunting.

And when did rights have to prove their benefit to society? Can we repeal the voting rights of everyone in the US that isn't a rich white educated land owning male under the premise that all those other people voting was really of no benefit?

It's the best of times. The interesting part is that I don't personally believe in full gun prohibition, since that would be punishing people who have done no wrong. Just that we could do a hell of a lot more to keep them in check and there's so much whining and belly aching from the pro gun crowd over one of the most dangerous items a person can have.

Hows about mass shootings and all the other shootings combined? Add in accidents to that mix as well.

You're right about this. On both points. Basically the decision to make a law or not make a law should be based on reasoning that can make a case for either side. I favor strict regulation because guns, legal or not, DO cause a LOT of mayhem and destruction like it or not for the pro guns. The case for no regulation boils down to "I may have to defend myself one day, scary government or foreign invaders, and maybe I like to target shoot or hunt".

So while we bicker and argue and keep from doing things we could do to limit gun violence while allowing people their liberty to own a gun the bodies keep piling up.

I wish more people though this way. My argument against car ownership is obviously facetious, but it would be wonderful to have fewer of them on the road. People have enough debt and insurance costs without them.

Didn't you just spend a post belittling the importance of car accidents? Why don't you go find us some per capita comparisons there.

  6. Do you guys really think it's ok for people like me to have an assault rifle?
    Boo, Hiss.

  7. What I don't get is why it's okay to have a gun that can kill someone a mile away, but not a grenade that can only harm someone within a dozen yards or so, and can only kill someone much closer. If I want to lob sport grenades in my cornfield, why shouldn't I be allowed to?

No, it boils down to the freedom of choice and not wanting anymore oppression tomorrow as I had yesterday. I don't own a gun. IF and when I ever decide to purchase one, I do not want the process harder or more intrusive. I don't want some nonsense like Cal wants where my mental health records would become public and I've have to go in and be evaluated every three years. I don't want this thing I spent money and time on taken away if I fail some arbitrary mental health unit.

I like the choices and options I have right now. It isn't that much different in why I appose shit like CISPA. I like how I surf the Internet today and all the options and freedom I have in doing so. I don't want a government computer file somewhere that keeps a record of IF ad How many times I see some girl give a donkey a hand job while scrolling ye ole image board.

And I would like the same choices and options for a lot of drugs. I'd like to know that if I tried something I wouldn't get fired or put in jail.

I want to be my own adult. I want to be able to partake in things that might be 'bad.' I want to read up, research, and decide for myself. I don't want to become a criminal for trying something when I've yet to hurt anyone else or stop being productive.

I'd be ok with people owning grenades. Make it like dynamite.

The reason given for you not being able to own them is that you can not reasonable protect yourself with one. If you used one in your house to protect yourself, you'd probably kill yourself or destroy half the stuff you were protecting.

Freedom of transportation is my thing. If I could get around as easily on transit as I could my car (like in NYC) I would dump it.

How could this possibly NOT be true. You're trying to impose your view of "safety" on me through the same means. One is putting up fences, the other is taking them down. The middle ground on this stance is pretty much where America is right now.

Everyone in America is living in a country that blessed its population with these freedoms. Blessings and curses are always a matter of perspective. These are freedoms no other country has. So while kids dying is horrible—it is a price to pay for the openness. If the answer is not to be so open then I disagree with that entire ideal. You and I and our kids aren't snowflakes. History has proven that it is categorically idiotic and untrue to assume government taking actions away from its citizenship makes things better. And we live in history, as much as our generation seems to think it's all stories in books.
