  1. The more I see the more I think the end solution is really going to be massive global agreements/government, which could be years off.

    Yoshi says that unions make our car companies uncompetitive (which he is probably right), so the solution is to get rid of the union. But the union isn't inherently inefficient, it just can't compete with non-unions. If there comes a day where wages are more comparable, then worldwide unions, or at least every country have something comparable might help to solve some wage discrepancy problems between the rich and middle class/poor.

    I don't know if asia will have anything comparable to our unions. Many asian cultures find much of how we express our individuality to be immoral.

    I wouldn't be surprised if they were anti union because they would fight for the needs and wants of a group of people vs the company, state, government etc, which they associate with the greater good of Asia.

    Bad management makes/made our car companies uncompetitive. Basically most if not all major car makes have unions, sometimes virulent unions in their home countries. Whenever you think of UAW issues do remember they're not responsible for the Pontiac Aztek or forgetting to properly fuse protect the cruise control sensor on so many Fords that caught fire etc. etc.

  6. Management is at the core of why so many things suck these days. Has there ever been a time when the ratio of management to producer been so out of whack? That's how people need to keep jobs now, just move them to management. Well, you can't move everyone there. Good managers and decision makers are hard to find. And just because you were good doing X doesn't mean you are good at a management level.

    Yes, paying way above market value for labor has nothing to with uncompetitiveness.

    I am sure every company has its share or more than its share of management mistakes, but when you start out at X + 25% or whatever with your labor costs, those mistakes have less mitigation potential.

  8. Labor across this country is horrifically under paid. Even with unions. Executives making absolutely disgusting levels of salaries is the problem, not unions

    How do you define "absolutely disgusting levels of salaries," and what executives are you talking about? CEOs?
