Thread: The Obama Presidency

  1. Again noone here watched the trial. I have twice in two separate threads talked about the trial. Diff is right there was no evidence that Zimmerman walked back to his car. It's his words. BUT There is evidence that someone turned around and approached the other person at the T-Intersection (second eyewitness; Rachael Jenteal is a separate witness.). There is evidence that Trayvon was over Zimmerman due to his hoodie being 3 inches away from his body (Dr. Vincent Di Maio). The Prosecution's witness during Cross Examination said that he would NOT advise someone taking Zimmermans action BEFORE they died. Yoshi is right it was not about Stand Your Ground. During Pre-trial they did bring it up, but their whole defense was based on Self Defense and that's it. The FBI and DOJ have already for 18 months had an investigation on if this was Race based and the answer is NO. Profiling yes ... which BORDERS race, but he did NOT follow him because he's Black. He followed him because he was walking around suspiciously (heading to his dad's house) ie: high on something (which Zimmerman said on the 911, police investigation, and various tapes the Prosecution used in the trial.

Finally, the only reason race was even brought up was because the NBC editing of his 911 call.

No during Bankruptcy the City will be able to re-negotiate the pension. Detroit only filed for bankruptcy because they can pay certain bills, but not ALL the bills. I may be mis-reading please clarify if so.

Although Michigan's constitution protects public employee pensions from being reduced, federal bankruptcy law does not necessarily offer that same protections to pensioners. It's uncertain how Michigan's constitutional guarantee of retiree pensions would fare before a bankruptcy judge.
State law says what you just said cannot legally happen. Federal laws don't offer the same protection but it's pretty much up to the judge right now.

Stand your ground is fine. Or at least better than the alternative. I don't want to live in a country where people are afraid to defend themselves because they're terrified they'll go to jail if there isn't enough evidence to verify they were scared for their life.

  6. Nah man Florida Stand Your Ground law is really really really open to interpretation. Thus, Icarus's "Florida is the Wild West" post.

But yeah Stand Your Ground wasn't even entered into the trial as a defense. The Defense just went with Self Defense . That's it. Initially, Stand Your Ground was only to be used for Home Invasions. They then said that even if you leave your home. Your personal space is your domain (what?).

Doesn't Texas have it like that?

also, I think people worry too much about stand your ground being a loophole.

You really have a few types of murders. Most murders are committed by people close to the victim. As such, they have a history with the victim. There is a long line of proof and evidence to determine if the murder was premeditated.

The other common types are crime related or crazy ted bundy shit. With crime, again you usually have evidence and a motive. With crazy Ted Bundy types, there is less evidence and a motive, but the person is unlikely to be happy with just one murder. Even if they got away with 1 murder by arguing 'defend your ground' what are the chances they'd stop there? About none. They'd do it again, making it harder each time to argue for stand your ground.

Seriously, about the only people that commit '1' murder are friends and family during a moment of passion. You then have a mountain of evidence to determine if it was a murder or defense just by the nature of the relationship.

It is logistically unlikely that someone would just randomly go pick a fight, kill the person, get away with via stand your ground and then that be the end of it.

  9. 73% of Blacks in Florida have used the Stand your Ground law to get out of a conviction ... and won.
