The BGMF and other nonprofits and, yes, the gubment, can put research into diseases/issues that affect a far larger number of people who happen to be extremely poor and can't pay $50,000 a year for cancer treatment based on gene sequencing. Often the methods and technology already exist, after all they've been used in the west, they just haven't been delivered to these places because those places can't pay for them.
Also x2: Look at the way they are trying to eradicate polio. The techniques to eradicate a disease are well-known, we've done it once. It's just the money and profit motive isn't there. Pfizer's shareholders don't want them spending money on immunizations in the Sudan unless they can turn it into some BS marketing campaign.
