If you want to sell rare things with a niche market you still have to find a way to keep business going. Lighters, flasks, stickers, etc. would sell great to people waiting in line for a show. You're in business to make money, and there is a strategy to both carrying costs long term vs. short term that have to be addressed. This is why people think it's hard to start businesses - they have some honeymoon picture of their dream job and not having to do shit they don't want to do. Then they don't do the dirty work (like selling cheaper items to carry overhead in the short term) and close down. Business isn't that hard. Like I said on the last page - just make money.
If selling a few flasks and lighters means he can produce nice amps, and sell instruments at a good profit (that probably move slower) then so be it. Swallow your pride. Once he is established around town to musicians as the place to go he can drop that shit. But you know what? If he's making revenue off of flasks and lighters I doubt he'd want to at that point, anyway. And at that point he can probably have his pick of guitars / instruments at cost. You can work in a boring field or be poor (mostly both) or do something about it.
