It's not even that some times. Many of these parents are willing, but they're working like three jobs just to get food on the table, so they rarely see their kids let alone have the opportunity to read to them.

That's how it was for my brother and I in our early childhoods. It was just the two of us, but my parents still had to work multiple jobs just to support us. We were fortunate enough to have a family friend who was like a big brother to us and took the time to hang out with us while my parents were at work, making sure we did our homework, stay out of trouble, etc.

Whatever option was going to be taken on health care would involve government interference.
a great deal of that is the governments fault for not fully getting involved in the system.

There is a great deal of red tape and paper work in modern medicine. Dealing with it normally requires more staff. Skilled staff that probably makes about 50k or more a year, each.

When hospitals and clinics get non paying patients, they up the cost for everyone else to cover operating expenses.

Things like medicare and medicaid refuse to pay the market price for treatment or refuse to pay for certain treatments, period. To deal with this some doctors give unrequired test that they know will be paid for. They then go an extra step and give these unrequired test to other non government insured patients so that if they get audited, it will look like standard procedure. (my dad doesn't do this, btw.)

I don't like how expensive it is any more than the next guy. Back when my dad had cancer, he put off the surgery because of how much it cost. But I also don't like care driven by saving money. Because part of the reason he had to wait was because his insurance would not pay for it until a certain time. Had he waited any longer for the surgery, I may not have a dad.

I'd like a government plan too. But I don't want it at the cost of quality. And until this point, the US government has given no indication by prior actions that they will insure full quality for everyone. They have done the opposite. In all previous forms of health care they have offered, they have shown that they are going to fuck someone.

I respect aspects of Ron Paul and believe his perspective is needed in the government for balance but he has no business being anywhere near the presidency. The man fell in love with the Austrian school of economics, many principles I also agree with but not in exclusivity, and this creates a dangerous bias and lack of pragmatic economic thinking, and his view of sound money is flawed and inflexible.
I personally think it's flawed. Which is why I was saying earlier I do not support throwing out lobbying. It's a tool for business to influence policy - that in itself is not bad. The secrecy and back-room aspects of it is, because it takes accountability away from those in the ears of our politicians. It also makes it exclusive - if it's an open and public forum then NPO reps for human causes can have a shake at the stick, too. It's much more balanced.

He also supports free trade yet campaigns for the US withdrawal from the WTO, NATO, and UN, three vehicles that enabled the rise of American power through global economic influence resulting in a virtual hegemony and ushering in a new world order to replace the collapse of the European imperial system. He advocates a form of nationalism and protectionism, cries for his twisted vision of restoring sovereignty by relinquishing the very structures that enable and support it, his non-interventionist foreign policy is a severe threat to American security and prolonged prominence. He is also questionably a racist and homophobic, only questioned because of his denials and counter-explanations for comments attributed to him.
If by "influence" you mean bullying. I understand the relevance of an organization such as the UN but their stance on things like Eugenics/Social Biology and the fact that only 5 countries in the world have any real power is absurd. It's not like that plan on reconciling new nations in to the top 5 (China, America, France, England and Russia). So when you say it's been good for the world you mean it's been good for those who hold the influence in the world. That needs to be expanded exponentially.

Same kind of deal with the WTO. As it stands it's doing things (along with the FDA in America) that is so terribly pro-big Pharma it's hard to take it seriously. Why decree that any illness must be cured by an FDA and WTO approved drug? So now if you're incontinent it would be illegal for doctors in some states to tell you to eat prunes. Because you have to take a pill to cure it instead. Or if you have scurvy to eat citrus. The WTO regulates everything you put in your mouth with the utmost control except for drugs. Also arguments are always won by WTO approved countries regardless of relevancy, urgency or merit. If you are not in the WTO you are wrong. So if you have a legitimate issue with the WTO you are effectively sanctioned. You are with us or you are against us doesn't work in diplomacy. There are shades of grey. Lots of them.

I think Ron Paul may be a bit homophobic. But he has gone on the record in saying: [I]"I am supportive of all voluntary associations and people can call it whatever they want."

The only racist element to him that I know of (which - who knows I don't know everything he's said) was a comment from Rand Paul that was taken out of context due to tape delay in a completely predatory media interview. They asked Rand is he could have a moment of his time, and then asked if he supported separate clubs for different races. He said "yes" responding to them asking for a moment of his time in a noisy crowd and played it up like he support separate clubs for different races.

I am not a Ron Paul junky. You won't see me defend him tooth and nail like Squall because I don't agree with the way he goes about unrealistically setting policy. I think a lot of the way he goes about things is too fanatical to ever be prudent. But setting in motion things like auditing the Federal Reserve and bringing accountability to businesses is an extremely noble and worthwhile cause. Reason enough to have him round and in the running. As a libertarian I enjoy his stance on human choice and rights. If you want to smoke weed, do coke, and fuck a man up the ass you should be free to as an American. There are always going to be assholes telling you what you can't do or what you shouldn't do. Recently through the guise of "scientific discourse" that is really just agenda driven politics looking for a reason.

Anyway, by and large I think we're agreeing here, Gooch. Not sure if he's the right candidate (probably not). But one thing is for sure - he'd probably tidy up and point out some of the corruption going on if they let him audit a few unscrupulous relationships and hand holding going on in Washington.

It is meaningless in the context I'm saying it because I don't want to go point by point what his policies are. But there are real definitions and policies he has supported. Smaller government, auditing the federal reserve (which is not a branch of government, a private corporation, that controls the flow of money), doing away with excess lobbying and increased accountability in government.

this is a nice idea, but I have never heard of anything like it in practice. I can't think of any current government run care in the US that writes doctors a blank check.

I can however think of a few that tell doctors what they will pay, or that they won't pay at all.

What makes you think that anything new will be different than handful we already have? What makes you think we will establish a blank check payment plan for the entire country?

Go re-read my initial post.
If you agree to pay me $5 and then print 2x the money, you no longer paid me the former present value of that $5. Paying someone in meaningless paper is not rewarding them for their services.

So you do admit that people have different opportuinities/unequal footing from the get go yet still take a harsh asshole mentality for public works programs designed to help those who didn't have it as good as you growing up?
When I was young, my parents both worked at Sears, and we had a tiny apartment. What the fuck is this "as good as you" assumption bullshit? The fact that my dad busted his ass to eventually become an executive doesn't change the fact that I attended public high schools, a public university, and have earned every cent I have ever made on my own. And my daughter will do the same. My parents invested time in me. They didn't have as much money.

Hell, my student loans just got paid off a couple year ago. So take your silver spoon bull and eat shit with it.

This sounds like my life when I was young, except for the parents-working-at-Sears part.
