Thread: The Obama Presidency

  1. So?
    Boo, Hiss.

  2. Dave is wrong.

  3. Well wake me up when the renaissance starts in China.

On a related note: Asian people look like fish

Of course, it would most likely just be horrible metal music with shitty guitar solos.
I have a bunch of rap and blues from Iran in my iTunes. It's ok, I guess. Iran has a bunch of underground pubs and music clubs. If the government finds them they can be jailed and the women put to death. They do it anyway. You can tell by the way the music is it's very rudimentary and emulative, but they are infants in a world of composition hundreds of years old. I admire them for it.

  5. There's a documentary about a rock group in Iraq, I think it's called 'Heavy Metal in Baghdad' - was up on Netflix stream instantly not too long ago, may still be.

Still, I consider middle eastern countries to be leaps and bounds ahead of China, and China to be leaps and bounds ahead of North Korea in terms of artistic expression. Part of it is cultural, but a lot of it comes from having a totalitarian government that shuts out the rest of the world from its citizens.

  6. That's all pretty true, but there's a big difference between 'behind' and 'nonexistant'

This is dave we are talking to here. His ego is so huge that he probably doesn't consider anything he doesn't like to be art. And since china keeps out all the awesome stuff Dave likes, how can Chinese people make more of it for him to like?

  8. You're the one who brought up the subversive shit, which is where the conversation has been.

I don't doubt that Chinese people make vases and paintings and pop music. None of which is important or interesting in any way

Maybe. I think it depends on your class in China. I have a lot of Chinese friends with cousins who still live in China. They listen to whatever they want in the comfort of their own home. The problem arises for the right to assembly and public dissent more than anything. As far as expression goes you may be right (since it isn't free). But all of rock and roll was created under free speech. Punk included. So maybe you're right.

The one thing china has leaps and bounds over the middle east is women's rights. Women are possessions still in the middle east. Egypt was a bit better because women could refuse a suitor. Not so in Jordan. You saw very few women walking around over there freely. The ones that did were usually upper class and educated. But even being a strong women there is a line you have to walk between cultural understandings and your own freedom.

Ok, lets say you did not make a blanket statement and you were talking about my point earlier about art as a product. Or in other words, all the shit our entertainment industry makes.

Are you really arguing that because the government is controlling, that China can not have an entertainment industry? That they can't have a horrible Chinese sienfield? Or horrible Chinese drama blockbuster movies?

They can have all that horrible shit. It will just be censored. The scripts will probably have to meet approval and crap will have to meet approval before it airs. And it probably won't be that much worse than 90% of what big American entertainment pumps out. I mean seriously, how many blockbuster movies or pop albums take jabs at the man? How many don't? No, there probably won't be any chinese rap albums about killing cops but there will probably be a lot of shitty love songs, sad songs, life is great songs, etc.

If anything, this scenario highlights why it will suck for China to be a full on world super power with a consumer economy (at least in part). At what point will Hollywood start to take Chinese censorship into account so that they can cross market a show in china? And at what point are they going to try to save money and make both the US and Chinese version of the show the same, with the same censorship, from the very first draft of a script?
