China's per capita GDP is pretty low (~$4000) but it's also about quadrupled in the past three decades. The economy is still growing extremely quickly - it's been around 10% per year this past decade. Millions who were once poor now are not.
Chinese cities can be very prosperous. The problem is that the rural areas are still desperately poor, and the CCP maintains a residency system (named hukou) which limits the ability of people to move from rural areas to urban ones. However things are improving rapidly by any measure.

China is awesome because if they decide that making solar panels is a good way to make money, they become the worlds largest producer of solar panels in no time whatsoever. But it's not like the workers are treated well or paid highly, there still isn't a real "middle class" but there will definitely be one soon enough.
I am very curious to see in the next few years if 10% growth will be sustainable.

I just read in the newest Economist that it's still growing at that rate (it was down a bit in 2009, though, but still above 9%). The Chinese authorities are starting to leverage the fact that the white devils built them an infrastructure and manufacturing base basically for free, and demand is growing internally. The government wants to focus on increasing wages and raising consumption rather than infinite growth. I think China has a bright future ahead of it.
