The issue is that we don't have to do away with one or the other. The GOP does not understand this or is using spending cuts as a guise to end distributions to certain groups. If it's the former, we then have idiot Republicans who don't realize that Federal government spending cuts are functionally the same as tax increases. History will not look kindly upon this crop of Republicans or their supporters. The two investments that a government should never forsake if it intends to serve the public purpose include health and education.

I support this trade. Do away with the draft, raise the driving and voting age to 21, and keep Sesame Street. But make that all one bill so it all has to be passed. No line item veto shit.

You sound like my dad being all "old white man" when he says they should raise the price people pay for gas to keep kids off the fucking road because he's tired of seeing them drive around.

I was half joking, but there has to be a more moderate solution where multiple wrecks prior to your 18th or 21st birthday cause you to lose your license for a protracted period of time. Some states probably have something like this already. And obviously any type of DUI should carry a very, very harsh penalty.

edit: Actually, screw that. Take age out of it. If some bitch putting on make up is involved in multiple wrecks or some asshole texting is, take their license for a couple years too. Driving isn't a right... which is why it's ok to mandate insurance on cars but obviously unconstitutional to do the same on health.

There are a lot of days I think money and education are inversely proportional to happiness. There's a point in most people's careers where the sacrifice necessary to make every additional dollar has a larger negative impact on their happiness than the dollar has a positive impact. Similarly, I often think that if I were not smart and/or educated (hard to separate these in some cases) enough to know how bad shit was getting out there I'd be a lot happier.
