You're an odd duck Gohron. You don't think it is practical to own a gun to defend yourself against other individuals, but you think they are a good deterrent for something like an invasion from China.

How is that odd? The self-defense idea has some credibility but it also leads to a dangerous mentality where a lot of individuals are just waiting for the chance to arise for them to shoot someone. People are arming themselves with dangerous weapons with which they have little training to use just to prepare for something that's probably never going to happen and if it does, they may end up making the situation worse than it already was. You could say the same thing about defense from domestic/foreign invaders but it's a completely different idea and a national issue rather than self-defense (which is an individual issue).

I'm not against people owning weapons for self-defense but the standard has to be set a little higher for who can get the papers to carry around in public. Just about anybody can get a CCW in PA. Training courses would be a good start to the requirements. It's the poor attitude and lack of firearm training that makes them impractical for self-defense in the modern US. In rural areas, it's a little different (and maybe that should be taken into account) but cities and their suburbs are much more dangerous places for guns to be used for any reason.

I don't think that's a bad idea but the problem is convincing nearly everyone else.

And I don't know if you've gone, or for what, or how many classes, but even if you take mostly classes you like, you still end up with some that feel like someone else's shit. A fine oiled machine that makes you the best whatever you want to be, it is not.
