Honestly, I think it helps more than the mass transit commuter (homeless people do not have Kindles - well, maybe on day one of being homeless). Have you ever tried reading a book in bed when you're nearsighted? How about paging through the New York Times in a public place? Color would be a great addition for textbooks, but 99% of the books I read come in black-and-white, so the current screen is not a deal breaker.
Reading on a Kindle is significantly preferable to reading a book in most respects and markedly better than reading on a telephone in just about all respects. In fact, reading on a phone is like playing Gears of War 2 on a DS.
This will get a few nerds' heart pumping...

Unless you are busy texting your boyfriends, I don't see what the problem is.
If it is perfect then they wouldn't have a reason to make Kindle 3.
