I'm just saying this becaause there are a lot of petitions that gathered up a lot of signatures, but when the product (say, Saint Tail for example) hit shelves, the sales were suprisingly poor (which is why these petitions "don't work" as you put it). I think companies are more interested in people who bother to show that they're willing to put their money where their mouth is than people who don't bother beyond taking four seconds to sign a petition...
That doesn't even begin to touch on some petitions such as the one that asked that the title of Tolkien's "The Two Towers" be changed in light of the 9/11 incident...
