Thread: Martyrs

  1. Do you read Rue Morgue?

They had a full feature article on Martyrs a couple of months ago. Also, talked a bit about the new wave of french horror that's been coming around the past few years.
"I see the world didn't end yesterday."

    "Are you sure?"

  2. Put this on the top of my list, thanks for the heads up.

Not really. I've picked up a few issues and its fine and all, but I get most of my info from a few podcasts. My interest was piqued when one of the hosts of The Gentlemens Guide to Midnight Cinema chose this film as his favorite of 08.

  4. Sounds interesting, I should see if I can add it to the Netflix. We seem to have the same taste in horror so I think I will dig it.

  5. I saw this on Saturday night, and while I too am unsure about whether I liked it or not, it's definitely like nothing I'd seen before.

And you were right Arjue - I found this 100% less sickening than Inside. Man, fuck that movie.

I kind of agree with your take, except I don't think she offed herself for guilt, but more because the knowing was just too much to bear. The way she tells the guy "Keep on doubting". Maybe that's why only the martyrs ever actually see 'it' when they do - because it's not possible to continue living once a person knows. It's all speculation, but yeah.

I kinda felt that the girl got off lightly compared to what we'd seen of the other girls - the one with the hardware fucking stapled into her head, for example. Anna (was that her name?) got the fuck beat out of her (mind you, she got the fuck beat out of her - one punch in the face as she's falling unconscious to the floor made me wince), but it was much less WHAT THE FUCK. I guess that makes the final stage so much more shocking.

Thinking back on it now, I did enjoy this.

  6. Ugh, and when she wakes up all bruised and virtually blind from swolen over eyes and she cops that knee to the head. jesus. French people are fucking sick.

I think the violence in this movie is much worse than Inside, you just chose to watch Inside at the worst possible time in your life lol.

The film ends with a definition of a Martyr, which was retardedly not translated in my copy of the film. It actually takes the old meaning of someone who bears witness rather than someone who dies for a cause. In a way this makes the film make more sense, even if the more known meaning kinda fits too.

Haha, I know. I don't know if I'll be able to finish it. It was fucking traumatising.

    That's good to know.

  8. Watched this yesterday, and I can't say I liked it much. That said, it was very well done, and certainly unlike any horror film I've ever seen. It was kind of a mix of Hellraiser, The Fountain, and Hostel.

I felt it dragged (I couldn't believe it was only 90 min long) and it felt like two different films. The first half ended up feeling irrelevant after what happened towards the end.

I detest the recent rash of torture-porn flicks, and this felt very similar: cold, detached, and meticulous in how it depicted suffering. I think it would have been much more enjoyable to watch if most (or all) of the torture was cut out. I realize its value for the story, but ultimately, it was pointless to see.

It seemed like the filmmakers were trying to say something profound about death and suffering, but it became so open-ended, any message was lost. I think the basic idea was a very good one (I wouldn't be surprised if a cult like this really existed) but it seemed like the filmmakers weren't sure what do to with it......so they ended up leaving it unexplained. Ugh.

My interpretation of the ending: Mademoiselle killed herself because she wanted to see what Anna saw. But there's no way to know if what Anna saw was actually real....the trauma she suffered could have made her see anything, and we never learn what it was anyway. Maybe that's why there was so much time spent in the first half regarding the naked ghoul....a product of torture-spawned psychosis.

IMO Let the Right One In is a far superior horror film on all counts. It was elegant, chilling, and hooked me emotionally. I didn't feel a shred of sympathy for anyone in Martyrs because they didn't seem to be real characters. It did feel very J-horror to me, except Martyrs was far more explicit (needlessly, imo) without conveying the air of mystery that J-horror can do so well.

Watch this if you like horror. It's definitely interesting, and at least it's somewhat of an attempt at something new. But while I appreciated it, I don't think I liked it much.

  9. So I picked this up when it came out, but the bitch that work is, I was just able to watch it last night.

Have to say, I absolutely loved it, but it was really hard to enjoy it. Can see why it's so polarizing for audiences. I agree that it really didn't feel like it was only just over 90 minutes. Though it didn't feel like it dragged in a bad way, IMO. And I didn't really feel that the torturing was gratuitous.

Also, I don't think comparing this to Let the Right One In is really fair to either movie. Aside from the horror genre, the two don't have anything in common.

About the best description I could give to a couple of friends afterwards was, "holy fuck..."
"I see the world didn't end yesterday."

    "Are you sure?"

  10. I think the dragging out was intentional to make the repeated torture really wear you down.

This movie is out on DVD, so check it out! Also, the soundtrack has been released for free as 320kbps mp3's
