Thread: Thief 4

  1. With them pulling out rationale so that civilians will be conveniently missing while giant packs of policemen roam the streets like shoppers on Black Friday, it might end up just as awkward in similar ways. On the other hand, the stealth system sounds a lot better and the way they've revamped most of the game in response to the fans sounds like they're trying pretty hard. I have more faith in this game, but I also expect more out of Thief in the first place so we'll see.

  2. Dishonored was great. I dunno about this one. Deus Ex HR was like 60% of a great game.

  4. The world design and atmosphere in Dishonored is perfect. It has the type of levels where you can imagine other events happening or different people passing through - instead of just a transparent set of obstacles to overcome (if you get my meaning - the world has a sense of history, the levels appear not to exist in a vacuum). Even though the story is nothing groundbreaking (typical tyrannical government vs. revolutionaries thing with all the predictable double crosses) I actually found it really well done and I was pretty into it throughout. The game also had some fresh mechanics and ideas for the stealth genre. Outstanding game overall.

EDIT - an example of the "implied history" I'm talking about is the rat plague, I thought that side story was sweet

  5. 17 minutes of footage of the first mission. I only briefly skimmed parts of it because I'd rather just play the game, but it looks like decent stealth and pilfering from drawers.

    Eurogamer: 6/10:

At times the game suffers from a lack of ambition, placing far too much importance on the tiresome looting of endless cupboards and dressers in the vain hope that this will be enough to propel you forwards. In other places, Thief suffers from too much ambition, unable to draw its systems into a cohesive whole. Whether the game simply needed more time or entirely different foundations is never quite clear. Either way, it's a game that adds up to less than the sum of its parts. Undeniably, Thief suffers greatly by comparison to Dishonored - its more coherent, more thoughtfully and successfully designed cousin, in whose shadow Garrett and his game now cringe.
    Edge: 7/10

I never expected it to compete with Dishonored, so in some ways these reviews are in line with my cautious expectations. Now I need to decide if it's worth ~$30.

Screw it. I'll be busy with South Park next week. I'm not going over budget this month for a 6-7/10, no matter the name behind which it hides.

edit: I'm so pissed that this month, which looked so promising for so long, is going to shit the bed in a 24 hour span. I was looking forward to Danganronpa, but I certainly didn't expect it to be this month's best game. Ugh.

  7. I'm not surprised in the least by the review scores all around, I thought this game looked troubled for some time and would fail to reach great heights. That said, review scores aren't the end-all-be-all and I'm sure some might still find it enjoyable.

While this is true, they are almost never lower than they should be, unless we're talking about a niche product like a shooter.

While not completely unexpected, this news, on the heels of the LoS2 leaks, really has me in a funk today. Two of top-X series of all-time are getting sub-par sequels the same day? It's not like we're spawning a pile of great stuff to replace them either.

  9. Jury's still out on Lords of Shadow 2 though.

  10. it is?
