Thread: Building Portfolios

  1. Building Portfolios

    Hey guys.

I've been submitting my portfolio around and been working on tweaks concerning feedback. I'm well aware that tailoring one to the industry or area of focus (children, adult, family, edgy) is almost always better than a generic catch-all. Lately I've been more interested in visual development in games or animation, but still feel my body of work is lackluster.

For the animators and concept artists at TNL: what content have you focused on to help land jobs? Is there a general rule of thumb as to the volume of work, and what areas that it concentrates on? When left to my own devices it becomes an attempt to mash as many different directions as possible. Now I'm looking for advice that can help focus my efforts and discipline.

If there's anyone else working on portfolios and looking for generic/specific help, this could be a good thread to do it in.

    Thanks!

  2. I have some ideas on this, lemme get them together and I'll give ya a thought out reply.

Short answer is, strong drawing (and a lot of it) goes a long way. Respect your work in your presentation and the viewer will too.

Physical portfolios are fun to make!

  3. If you're looking to get into like character design work, or pre-production stuff for animated films or games, everything I've heard is to show your process. So instead of having 2 or 3 finished designed characters in your portfollio, they want to see that AND the 50 previous ideas you went through to get to those final ones. They want to see that you can draw, that you can create lots of different ideas, and that you can refine those ideas. If its feature work, they're going to want to see a variety of styles too. I don't know about games.

I don't really send out a portfolio, but I do have a portfolio on my website, and on my reel I try to include a few of my best life drawing pieces.
