I didn't finish it because of a game-killing bug. It was above average though (not fantastic or anything)
Didn't you say something like that about Deadly Premonition and then you ended up buying it later anyway?
Nier's a strangely compelling game. Like previous Cavia titles, I doubt it has mass appeal but I'm enjoying its Team Ico-inspired world, epic encounters, cheesy yet addictive music, agile main character, unique magic attacks, etc.. I'm not sure I agree with Seik calling it "very unapologetically old school", though. It has a lot of modern conveniences like automatically marking where to go on the map and not sending you far back when you die.
I just beat this game. Took around 17ish hours, without doing any sidequests (they were all stupid fetch quests). Really charming game; I enjoyed the whole thing. The story gets really awesome around the halfway point of the game. This game would be a very worthwhile purchase when it drops in price (which I think will be pretty soon). It's a fun game despite not being great. Good job Cavia.
Nier has definitely made my "cheap" list. I'm curious without being actually excited, and might even feel somewhat guilty for not supporting it earlier if I end up enjoying it, but what can you do?

I finally got my 360 fixed and finished this. My opinion hasn't changed from earlier. There isn't a lot it does exceptionally well but it manages to be more than the sum of its parts. Some won't get the allure of it but I found the game much more appealing than Darksiders (which is still pretty good).
Sigh.
I'm about 2/3rds of the way through Nier Replicant now, and it's easily in my top 5 games from this generation. If I can even think of 5 games that have kept my interest.
Seriously, this game is really good. The mostly bad/mediocre reviews it's been getting are just a testament to how godawful videogame reviews are by and large. It's not perfect, but it's much more interesting than most games that are. And, most importantly, it's got a lot of heart.
It's also a mash-up of genres to an extreme I've never seen in an action/adventure game. The way Cavia just grabs a new gameplay style to suit any given moment reminds me of film language. Some moments are especially surprising and funny like the Resident Evil mansion and the dungeon that turns into a text adventure , and the basic combat/bullet hell mash-up is a great idea. The final product is much more original than it's been given credit for.
This of course goes without mentioning that it has the most memorable cast of characters and storyline from any game this gen.
I wonder if Square/Cavia didn't screw the game over a bit with the different characters for different regions thing. I'm playing the brother version, but I can't imagine the game suffers any from playing as the burly father dude instead.
$15 brand-new at Gamestop. If you've been waiting for cheap, it's hard to do much better.
I'll be tearing into my (brand-new, still-sealed, box not pawed by a million disinterested Gamestop customers) copy in a few minutes.
-edit- Enjoying the hell out of it so far. I probably should have picked this up earlier.
