Thread: Prometheus

  1. Prometheus

A couple of days ago an assumed rumor started at Bloody-Disgusting saying Fox was preparing a prequel story to Ridley Scott’s sci-fi/horror classic Alien with Michael Costigan, Ridley Scott and Tony Scott aboard to produce and an unknown named Carl Rinsch set to direct. However, what was assumed to be a rumor from an anonymous tipster has now proven to be true.

Collider.com caught up with Tony Scott at the press junket for Scott’s upcoming remake The Taking of Pelham 123 (6/12) and asked if the rumors were true.

“Yes,” Scott replied. “Carl Rinsch is going to do the prequel to Alien. He’s one of our directors at our company.”

When asked about a planned start of production Scott answered loosely saying, “Hopefully the end of the year,” but that by no means is anything to set in stone.

If you are interested in checking out some of Rinsch’s work you can view his commercial reel here.

    Oh... whatever.

  4. Better than a remake, at least

Does hollywood, make anything new, anymore?

  6. Sure, Drag Me To Hell, Up, The Hangover, Public Enemies, District 9. Those are all original movies. Most big blockbuster things are tied to franchises because you have to work less to market an Alien movie. I mean, it gets announced and everybody knows about it within seconds.

  7. HR Giger working on it.

However, 20th Century Fox swiftly jumped in to squash most of those rumors saying that there would be an official announcement soon letting us know what’s really going on with the (singular not plural) Alien prequel.

Unfortunately we’re still waiting on that official announcement from Fox – but while we wait we have another piece of Alien news that’s more than likely true. In an interview with Swiss TV news outlet Schweizer Fernsehen (or Swiss Television), the wife of surrealist sculptor and designer H.R. Giger (who won an Oscar for his visual effects work on the original Alien) said her husband is returning to work with Scott once more on the sets and creatures of the prequel.

You can watch the video interview with her HERE if you happen to speak German.
You might not be familiar with Giger’s name, but you’re surely familiar with his work – particularly in Scott’s original Alien. Not only did Giger create the look of the Alien creature, but also “The Derelict” and the “Space Jockey” seen briefly in the original. The prequel supposedly explores the origins of the Space Jockey.

One of the characters rumored to be in the prequel was called “Engineer 1″ who is to be played by a 6’5″ actor who would be created via CGI motion-capture. It could be that “Engineer 1″ is actually the Space Jockey, as seen in the first Alien.Scott has previously suggested that the carcass we saw in the original film actually contains a life form that looks very different to what we saw in the film.

    Interesting…
It’s definitely a good thing Giger is returning to the Alien universe (if this news is indeed true and not just another cog in the rumor mill). First of all, it means there will be consistency between the original film and the prequel (things should feel consistent considering that the prequel is supposedly the story of what led to the events of the original Alien. Second, Giger is clearly the right man for the job considering he designed the look of the original Alien creature and won an Oscar for his efforts, to boot. He clearly did something right.

We’ll keep you apprised of any Alien prequel news including if Giger is indeed returning to work on the film and, of course, we’ll let you know the details of that aforementioned official announcement.
Charlize Theron part of the movie?

The only official news for the time being is that Theron won’t take on the role of J. Edgar Hoover’s devoted assistant, Helen Gandy, in Clint Eastwood’s biopic about the FBI founder. What her next project will be, however, is not clear.

Theron is definitely out of the running to join J. Edgar, which recently added Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick to its cast as Agent Smith (no Matrix jokes, please). Deadline claims that Eastwood is now considering actresses Naomi Watts (Fair Game) and Amy Adams (The Fighter) as possibilities to play Miss Gandy, instead. Theron, meanwhile, is reportedly in the process of signing on for Universal’s new version of Snow White, in which she would appear as the evil queen.

Here’s where it gets tricky; Vulture is now reporting that 20th Century Fox had the role of Elizabeth Shaw (the female protagonist of Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel) rewritten and expanded to accommodate someone of Theron’s stature. The rumor is that a new version of the script will be sent to Theron later this week and only after that will the actress decide for certain what her next role will be.

Noomi Rapace of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo fame reportedly remains Scott’s top choice to play the attractive but hard-edged lead of his sci-fi prequel – and given Rapace’s fierce portrayal of Lisbeth Salander, she seems like a perfect fit for the part. If Scott has his way, the costly CGI project will apparently revolve around a multi-cultural space crew that could feature name actors like Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and/or Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class) – however, Fox is reportedly concerned about production costs and wants a better-known name than Rapace to headline the film.

To reiterate: the only concrete bit of news at the time being is that Theron won’t be starring in the Hoover biopic – everything else is essentially RUMOR and should be taken as so. There have been rumblings in the past about Fox delaying the Alien prequels (back when it was believed there would be two movies) and the studio having concerns about the budget for the entire project. Remember also that Scott is a highly respected, Oscar-nominated filmmaker with a healthy number of blockbusters under his belt – so he does have a fair amount of influence with respect to the casting of his Alien prequel.

Both Theron and Rapace are excellent actresses and either could make for an engaging lead in Scott’s latest (and presumably 3D) sci-fi venture, which will feature new work by Oscar-winning sculptor/set designer H.R. Giger as well. Production on the Alien prequel looks to get underway later this year, so expect an official statement about the film’s cast in the relatively near future. J. Edgar, meanwhile, will begin shooting next month and should reach theaters by late 2011.

  8. Hasn't it been known for a while that Giger was onboard? They said it's only one movie now, not two?

The rumor came out in October of 2010. And the change of two movies to one came about back in November.

  10. What is the space jockey? Was it just the dead alien on the derelict ship?
