Thread: Official SEN Games Thread (Sony Network)

  1. Sometimes Yoshi doesn't think before he speaks.

The problem is that Yoshi never had a C64 or an Amiga, which was where all the big European action games were located before the advent of the PlayStation. I think I've had this discussion about three times with Yoshi: just because you didn't play them doesn't mean that there weren't incredible European games out there.

This is why I added the edit to my post, which you quoted...

edit: What is interesting is that nearly everything you listed is from Eastern Europe. The wall coming down made them see the light, whereas the socialist idiots in france, Germany, etc. still don't get it.

Yeah, and now someone is going to say that Contra 4 exists. You guys need to put the bottle down.

In all seriousness, I have gone back and played stuff like the Turricans, and it's a total joke compared to Contra and Metal Slug. If that's the height of European action games, then I'm not missing much.

If it was on console and he grew up playing it, then it's good (Rayman, Tomb Raider, Ecco the Dolphin, Lemmings, Shadow of the Beast, Jaguar AvP, Cobra Triangle, Battletoads, etc.). If it wasn't and he missed out on it, then it sucked. That seems to be Yoshi's policy on old European-made games.

And for this gen, the TrackMania series alone is enough to make France awesome for game development.

You have to draw a line between "good" and great or classic though. None of the games you mentioned, except for Tomb Raider, was among the best of its generation. The best was all Japanese (except sports) in 2D and almost all North American in 3D. So if the best European games were "good," then that says their overall portfolio is pretty bad.

    Does not compute.

  8. From the developer's home page, Joe Danger is seeing a PSN release on June 8th (or the 9th in parts of the world that don't matter). No price mentioned, but I'm going to guess it ends up being $15. Destructoid has a decent preview of it up.

I played the game a fair bit and got to talk to the dev. team (all four people, lolz) at PAX East and it was one of my favorite games there. It's basically a mix of Excitebike/Trials and Tony Hawk; it's a game that you can play for score and the game can get stupidly difficult, with a number of different objectives to go for in each stage (score, time, coins, bananas, whatever). They even have a level editor in the game, just in case that's your thing.

  9. This has been on my radar for a while. I have $50 sitting in my PSN account (thanks rewards card and free points) so I'll probably get it.

  10. I just watched the video over at that Hello Games site and it looks pretty fantastic. I can't wait to play it.
