Thread: Chase H.Q. 2 (arcade)

  1. Chase H.Q. 2 (arcade)

Taito's new Chase HQ is not a remake of the Genesis Chase HQ "II", but it is instead a new sequel to the original arcade title- actually, this is the 4th in the series, developed by the third party studio GameWax. Two player competitive action is also available, with both players trying to be first to deliver the final hit on the criminal.

There are three different cars to select from - a marked police vehicle and two undercover ones. None of them can fire weapons like in SCI: Special Criminal Investigation, but they are rated in different categories similarly to the Genesis Chase HQ II. You can even give the car a new paint job before you select it. Nancy is played by a live actress, whose acting and dialogue are quite good. Unfortunately, Tony Gibson and Raymond Brody haven't joined her for CHQ2- so you can forget about "Let's go Mr. Driver!".

When you start a stage, you're told to take the gearshift into High if you haven't already. You get a rolling start on the criminal's car (in fact, you are close enough to see him pulling away from other police officers), and must land the first hit on it within your initial time limit. Striking a criminal vehicle for the first hit will extend the timer. You start each mission with only one Nitro. To get more, be on the lookout for Nitro tanks. Chase HQ 2 is not completely on rails- sometimes the road will fork. Rather than just one fork per track, there are at least a couple.

Rolling over or knocking down cones and other roadside objects racks up some bonus points, especially if the hits are chained- the value starts at 100 then doubles up to 1600. The "no crash" bonus for not hitting civilian cars in the original CHQ games didn't make it here, which is kind of a shame. Once a criminal is taken down, you get a time bonus. The time bonus is a baseline value such as 50000 pts, added to 500 pts. per remaining second. If you used a continue on that mission, you forfeit your time bonus. The criminal's car will lose some speed when it is heavily damaged.

Some of the criminals have interesting tactics. The third one is driving a stolen vehicle the WRONG WAY over an oval stock car racing track, into an onrushing pack of racers. He'll cause some of them to wipe out and possibly be thrown toward you. Careful! Later on there's an 18-wheeler that fires missiles, driven by a has-been football star turned terrorist.

The graphics are done in a cel-shaded style. You may notice a bit of occasional draw-in, but it's tolerable. When Nitro is used, the screen will blur a bit. The view can be changed to first person like that in Super Chase, or you can stick with the classic "chase" view. There are different kinds of wrecks- a light bump will slow you down, a hard bump will make you spin out, or you can even have a full-on crash (complete with a cracked windshield effect) if the impact with a civilian vehicle or barrier is hard enough. Sound is good, with Battle Gear style guitar rock for BGM, nice engine roars, and an awesome Nitro blast. Once a criminal is busted, there's a cut scene of him getting nabbed by several uniformed police officers. The cars all handle well.

What is bad? Your success seems a little too dependent on your acquisition of Nitro tanks. Miss more than a couple and I bet you've probably blown it. Once you've figured out where to snag the Nitro, the first three levels aren't that tough to finish. You can actually pass underneath the trailer of stage 4's 18-wheeler, so try to hit the rear back or the cab. Once I had a hard time getting the car out from between two pillars on a building. At five stages plus a bonus mission, CHQ2 ends a bit too quick. Eight stages would've been better. I don't hate force feedback, but it gets a little too strong when you use Nitro.

Chase HQ 2 is a good game, but a home port would need some extra content like an extended mode with more stages. If you're lucky enough to spot it in an arcade, give it a try.

  2. Played this at a Chuck-E-Cheese in Orlando, of all places. Thought it was pretty cool.

  3. I played CHQ2 at Rivertown Games at Kings Island. After a while, I finished it with 4 tokens (2 to start, 1 to continue) and had a score of 630K. It's awesome how the monster truck loses a tire and starts driving on a bare rim after you've slammed him around a bit.

The actress who plays Nancy is pretty cool, but I'm not sure who she is.
