Also, I finally bought some new CDs after months of not doing so...I got the first 2 Fates Warning albums (actually found these fuckers at a store!). Night on Brocken is pretty good, although it doesn't sound as epic as the next 2 albums...I love the title track, though. The Spectre Within is SU-FUCKING-PERB! I love those "Celtic gallop" riffs early Fates used, if I ever play in a metal band (which I intend to do, I'm gonna start taking voice lessons and probably try to learn guitar, although I do find the guitar rather intimidating...) I'll abuse those to no end. It's really a shame FW broke up...sure there's still a band that shares the same name, but it ain't the same band as far as I'm concerned...should be called Fates BORING! Ha! I kill me! I also got Solstice - Lamentations as I had heard something about it being medieval-sounding, but I'm quite disappointed with it. It's flat-out boring...riffs aren't catchy, doesn't sound medieval, rhythm guitar is tuned so low it might as well not be there (a big fat YOU'RE FULL OF CRAP to anyone who thinks downtuned automatically = heavy) and THE SINGER SOUNDS LIKE HE BELONGS IN A MOTHERFUKCING BOYBAND! I think I might adopt a strict "listen before I buy" policy from now on.
Hmmm, I don't know what to think of Wizard Combat. If you want more videogame/metal-sounding music, try Jangli Jaggas on mp3.com. They're a Pakistani "band" that makes Castlevania sounding music. Although it's stretching the definition of metal as far as it could possibly go (it's all electronic as far as I can tell), it's pretty cool for what it is.

The first three Fates Warning CDs are genius, but most of the time you have to put some time into those albums. They aren't love at first listen, and I think that's why some younger listeners pass them over a lot. But they get better with age. I don't know if it's being rereleased like the first two or not, but pick up a copy of "Awaken the Guardian" if you can; it's more Arch-era goodness and many argue that it's the highpoint of their career.

Hell, I'd say that "The Spectre Within" is one of the best American traditional metal albums from the 80s (it's up there with Manilla Road's "Crystal Logic," Manowar's "Into Glory Ride," and Queensryche's "Operation: Mindcrime"). I'm convinced that anyone that doesn't at least like the classic "The Apparition" doesn't like 80s metal at all...and amazingly, as important and influential as FW was, I can't think of any band that has ever tried to rip them off.

To be totally fair to Fates, the first album with Ray "One Note" Adler (No Exit) was okay, but everything after that is crap. They definitely went downhill after John Arch got booted out. I agree that new FW is boring.

I actually like SOLSTICE but they aren't (and never were meant to be) a medieval band. They're a doom metal band in the tradition of Sabbath et al. But what I like most about them is that their founder runs the Miskatonic Foundation, which releases lots of superb traditional metal stuff (Twisted Tower Dire, Slough Feg). Oh yeah, the Solstice you're talking about has broken up, and there was also a powermetal band and an American death/thrash band by the same name, so confusion abounds about that name...

  2. "Ergh, can't sleep again. Damn panic attacks..."

"Morrigan: I'll go ahead and set up an FTP, but I couldn't FTP at all last semester (at least not at a sane speed) so I don't know how fast or slow it will be. I'll give it a shot regardless. But I know that AIM sharing works (at least for some people, some can't connect at all for some odd reason), so if the FTP falls through it's either that or MIRC."

Alright, let me know when it's set up, I'll give it a look (probably when I get home, and if I get the computer... my brothers have been hogging it pretty bad! But hey, at least it gives me time to play Panzer Dragoon Saga so I ain't complaining too much...

"Skyclad - Where's the new shit? I want more than acoustic remakes of old songs, dammit!"

Damn straight! As I said on the MR chat the other night, I think that the band's soul died when Martin Walkyier left. Since he left, they have released their first-ever single, a lame live album with supposedly shitty sound quality, and a compilation of old songs. Hmmm.

"I've seen people push Theatre of Tragedy's "Musique" album as metal."

Sheesh, even MarkRyan said it wasn't metal...

"It's just discouraging sometimes when old favorites let you down."

I know we're not thinking of the same bands, but I agree. I loved every Vintersorg album to date, but the last one was a huge disappointment.

"How do some bands make the jump to a "more modern" atmosphere and has their music suffer (like Dark Tranquillity), and other bands thrive with the more modern sound (like Brainstorm)?"

Well I don't see nothing wrong nor all that 'modern' about the new DT... I still prefer The Gallery and Skydancer, of course, but it's still good.

"People should be masturbating to Persuader's music, not ignoring it."

"Is it just me, or was 80s Ozzy Osbourne one of the ugliest motherfuckers ever to walk the Earth?"

    What do you mean, "80's"?

"I don't know if I should see a shrink or not, but I must have something wrong with me when Winter's song "Goden" actually CHEERS ME UP!!!"

Aren't you studying to be one or something?

  3. Persuader... where can I find some samples? Sounds very intersting and I've (upon recommendation) read lots of reviews on them.

Morrigan: Panzer Dragoon Saga is badass.. on that note - I think musically I would be very intersted in a Metal Band that took to its style. I would fancy myself in a Metal Band named 'Grig Orig' and it would HAVE to have a hell of a drumer.

Vintersorg's new album has so far been somewhat unchallageing I like it, but it's far from my favorite. I guess that something like Cynical's feelings on ANATO. Personally I love that album. Not my favorite, but DAMN is it great.

  4. Damn straight! Grig Orig is a badass name for a band too! Mel-Kava (or Merkava...), Azel, Sestren are also pretty cool names for bands.

Go to http://www.metal-rules.com/sounds/ and the mp3 is right there. It's a bit less like old BG on this one than their first album, but pretty cool nonetheless.

Well, this is largely comparing Damage Done (which just sounds more "modern" to me with the keys and all) to Skydancer and Gallery. If all the keyboard parts were guitar parts on Damage Done, I'd be shitting myself with joy. Damage Done is pretty good (at least the best material off it is) but I prefer the first two albums by far...

  6. Only 2 days till Deliverance. Can't wait, but I don't have any money so I guess I'll have to wait anyways.

Can someone reccomend me some bands that sound alot like Children of Bodom and In flames earlier stuff.

  7. Cynical: Great song - I like them I think.

  8. was doing an overnight at work last night - and one of my coworker buddies put on the new album by the Donnas - "Spend The Night" - very awesome record - almost reminds me of the Runaways mixed with Motorhead-ish attitude - no deep lyrics - but I was more impressed with the fact that it was simple music that did not disgust me. Usually I find that I listen to more complicated or "busy" bands because for the most part - bands who do the whole stripped down style usually suck - but the Donnas surprised me - I'm defintily going to get that album.

Yeah I know its not metal - but its defintily rock music thats hardly being done anymore - I mean...they used a cowbell properly - I haven't heard a good cowbell since Appetite for Destruction!

  9. just punched a hole in a fence, didn't hurt as much as I suppose I always figured it would. I need a punching bag desperatley - anyone got one to spare - I can't get one because the fuckfaces tell me it costs money!!!!!

  10. Can someone tell me some bands that are like Children Of Bodom and In Flames.

ADDITION: I just listened to some music by a band called Kalmah. All I have to say is HOLY SHIT! They are amazing. Scandanavian Melodic Death Metal at its best. From what I heard they are just as good, or even better then Children fo Bodom, and I love Children Of Bodom. If you like Children Of Bodom, then you have to check out this band.
