Thread: The Metal Thread 4.0

  1. as goofy as they can be sometimes - I must admit that that new Hammerfall single "Hearts of Fire" just rocks like hell! "Hearts of Fire! Hearts of Fire! Burning, burning with desire!"

  2. Well, there wasn't another copy of Damage Done in stock, so the girl at the store refunded it, so it's not too bad... I was afraid they would say there was nothing that could be done about it. That would have sucked.

  3. I thought that they would tell you to get lost. You got lucky.

  4. Yeah I feared that too. But the girl was cool about it. She was like "no shit..." and seemed a little confused as to what to do ("gah I'm tired today" she said jokingly), and seemed reluctant because she was supposed to replace it only if it was unopened, but she obviously realized that I wouldn't have been able to know it was the wrong CD without opening it, and she seemed to think "screw it" and refunded it anyway.
It's a big retail store here, and I don't think they'd make a fuss over losing money for one CD like that, so I'm not TOO surprised.

  5. I'm listening to lots of Summoning again.. Minas Morgul this time. I still don't think I like it as well as Stronghold or Mortal Heroes but there are some very worthwhile melodies there. I wish they had more to produce with. Lyriclly these two guys are brilliant... absolute poets.

Well, I guess, but you have to consider that almost all of their lyrics (save for the ones on Lugburz) were actually written by Tolkien himself or Michael Moorcock. They just rearranged them a bit...

  7. Damn... I thought they were very Tolkien-esque.

Well, that settles it. The band with lyrics by Tolkien is the band with the best lyrics

  8. Heheh, yeah. Some of the songs are rearranged so which poem the songs are based on is unclear, but most if not all all of the songs on Minas Morgul through Mortal Heroes are directly based on Tolkien's poems, save for a couple on Mortal Heroes which were lifted from Moorcock novels (Farewell, I think) and I think one on Minas Morgul.

Some are more obvious than others, though. "The Legend of the Master Ring" is just the old "Three Rings for the Elven Kings..." poem, A Distant Flame Before the Sun is a combination of Bilbo's poems in FOTR, The Mountain King's Return is from the Hobbit, Over Old Hills is The Cottage of Lost Play, etc.

Some are harder, though, because they're a mishmash of verses from different poems (Khazad Dum) and some I know are from Tolkien but not sure where.

  9. All seems quiet in the world of metal for now, perhaps for the better, I could stand to catch up on records I own that I have not listened too deeply to yet - as well as give my wallet a chance to grow stout.

I have been listening to film scores more than anything as of late, and the few that constantly see rotation are The Two Towers and Fellowship of the Ring scores, both brilliant although between the two I can say The Two Towers moves me more. Track number eight on that album, "Evenstar (featuring Isabel Bayrakdarian) and which plays during Lord Elrond's counseling of his daughter Arwen, is one of the most amazing pieces of music I've ever heard from a film score. A suitable counterpart for the Fellowship of the Ring soundtrack would be track number 17, "The Breaking of the Fellowship".

I do however favour the vocal ending credits track on Fellowship of the Ring more than the Two Towers however, that track being Enya's "May it Be". Its far superior to the "Gollum's Song" by Emilliana Torrini, which as I described to Tracer before - sounds like a masturbating cat.

  10. I know they're not coming anywhere near us....
But, Lacuna Coil have dropped off the Opeth/ Paradise Lost/Tapping the Vein tour. From what I read, it had something to do with Immigration, papers, etc....
"I see the world didn't end yesterday."

    "Are you sure?"
