A mellotron is a keyboard synth instrument usually used to imitate strings or stringlike sounds.

  2. Some new impressions...

    ASKA - Nine Tongues

Hmmm. This is an album with the riffs of metal but the subject matter of the songs ranges from somewhat goofy to glammy. The riffs are still meaty and Dio/Maiden inspired, but this album is a lot poppier than Avenger, and there's no balls-out fist-pumping metal anthems like "Angels of War" or "Valkyries." Overall it's decent but I need some more time to get into it (if that happens). Overall, pretty good no-nonsense metal, but approach with caution.

BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME - Songs on Website

Hmmm. I was told in another thread that this is death metal stuff, but this is about as death metal as Superman Underoos. BTBAM sounds sorta like Dillinger Escape Plan or even Meshuggah -- very strange "noisecore" or "mathcore" crap, which is the buzzword for what happens when Dream Theater buttfucks Earth Crisis or Zao or something. To give the devil his due, this does have a few metal moments, but the band shifts around so much that it's kinda pointless to get into any of the moments. The bottom line: these "songs" are long, incoherent piles of slung-together chord progressions and some of the shittiest vocals I've ever heard (they suck even for hardcore vocals!). I guess if you like DEP, Converge, or any other of the number of bands that play really weird, drug-inspired hXc stuff, then go ahead and try it, I don't like it.

SCYLLA (JP) - Various songs on mp3.com

Hmmm, this kinda sounds like early Dark Tranquillity on uppers, but there's some In Flames in here too. To avoid beating around the bush, the quality of these songs varies wildly but generally they're pretty cool musically. I don't think I like every vocal trick Eugene pulled on these songs, though, especially the song where the vocals are processed to hell. Apparently this is a one-man band but don't let that deter you, this sounds better than a lot of full "bands" out there in terms of playing ability. This is worth it just to hear some of the guitar shredding...

  3. Listening to SCYLLA right now, I like it somewhat. It has its moments for sure and yeah, the vocals aren't part of it usually.

Just thought I’d pop in and say thanks for mentioning these guys. I picked up their CD Northern Lights this weekend and I'm enjoying it immensely.

  5. Just bought Porcupine Tree- Absentia for, suprisingly, only 11.99 at Border's Bookstore...

Heheh, cool. It's always nice when my misadventures result in someone finding something they like...

    More mp3.com misadventures...

    PRIMORDIAL

I know that I've plugged them here before, but they have songs on mp3.com. If you like Opeth I'd recommend you at least try them, they have a similar atmosphere.

    JULIE LAUGHS NOMORE

Someone recommended these guys to me because they thought I would like it, and holy shit, I do! I can't really compare these guys to anyone that I've heard (at least not without remaining really obscure), save for Jester Race-era In Flames/early Dark Tranquillity but with a more death-metal slant. Think "December Flower" and you're getting there. They also have lots of flirtations with real heavy metal which are quite nice as well...

    SOUL EMBRACED

Death Metal....? Jeez, aren't we getting liberal with the term? This is screamo hardcore in the vein of Zao (with whom they share a label...), but less interesting. If you like choppy and boring hardcore with a singer ripped directly out of some screamo band then be my guest...

    ABUSE

They have a song called "Why do women hate me?" Well, it might be because you guys make grindgore (garnished with titles about wifebeating, no less) and have names like Mr. Fister. Whatever, FUCK THIS.

    ANAL BLEEDING

Yeah, I was expecting something bad but I couldn't resist. This sounds like Last Days of Humanity. Don't know them? Imagine a croaking toad on vocals with some negligible instruments wailing away in the background. I'm 99% sure these songs have no fucking lyrics, because there's no way that vocalist is forming anything larger than a syllable. My ass can make sounds more closely resembling words than this guy can...

    DECEMBER (Earache)

Y'know, with a name like December and an album like "The Lament Configuration," I would expect some great doom metal (or some lame gothy shit), but not hardcory grind/death. This is about par for the course with Earache now that every decent band ever signed to them is now gone (with the exception of Usurper and maybe a couple others), leaving shit like this and The Berzerker...

    ETERNAL DECISION

THIS is that Christian band that everyone thought was Metallica on Napster (at least on the Megadeth board way back when)? Well, now that I think about it, that singer could be James Hetfield's doppleganger...yeah, this does sound like Metallica, just not with the Metallica vibe. I guess this is a decent song, but since I've mentioned Lica more than ED in this review, there's not really too much to say of this band outside of that uncanny resemblance...

    COFFIN FOR MARY

Ummm...their mp3.com page is so gay that I contracted HIV just by looking at it. The music has some OK riffs but the suffocating keys and Count Chocula-esque vocals (we're talking BAD Bela Lugosi impression) pretty much banishes this from having any chance of winning my approval...

    MOONSORROW

Pagan Black Metal on Spikefarm. Hmmm...again, not bad but I'm not inclined to give this any awards. There's not a single thing here that other bands don't do better. I guess it's decent but when one has ANCIENT RITES, PRIMORDIAL, SUMMONING, and so many others, why take on another...?
