  1. What do you guys think of Lamb of God?

My friend wants me to go with him to Philly to see them next week... but I'm not sure if I want to go.

They're your standard-issue hardcore band. They have some metal in them but they're still more core than metal. Personally I think they suck balls and wouldn't go see them if they were playing in my living room...

Yeah, I just went to their site and downloaded two songs. They're nothing special, I think i'm gonna decline and ask if he wants to see the Haunted on May 16th

  5. some imports i picked up through a great little mail order company via work

Edguy - The Savage Poetry (re-recorded version 2000) - fucking fantastic - nice to have some fresh Edguy stuff back in rotation.

Sonata Arctica - Orientation .... this is the EP i've been looking for over 1 year to find - its got a great acoustic version of mary lou (a song packed with emotion i think) and a great cover(s) of "the wind beneath my wings" and "die with your boots on"

The Scorpions - Acoustica I thought this would be good - as its teh scorpions, how bad could it be - well its fucking fantastic - and defies my expectations. Its a live concert recorded in Portugal in an smaller setting and of course acoustic - there are cello players, female backing vocalists and amazing renditions of awesome songs. I'm glad i picked this up.

I've got a good thing going with this import company (i'll post the name and web addy later) - I can order their stuff via work - so borders pays the company and handles the shipping costs while all I pay for are the cds - heh - i avoid shipping costs and get great imports really quick! MY RACKET!

Well, I think Hate Eternal is a solid death metal band, and I might buy one of their CDs for $5-$8, but it's nothing worth wanking over.

meh......there really hasn't been a whole lot of stuff worth posting about lately. I guess the new Opeth CD is coming out in a few weeks, but other than that, the metal scene has been pretty quiet.

As a big Nile fan, I did find this one thread from sonicdeath interesting.

This was posted by Karl Sanders on Nile's message board. I'm siding with the Egyptian loving lads here...

The question was "Who is the most annoying band you have toured with?"

Absolute most annoying would be , no question,
    Arch Enemy.
    Except for Sharlee,
those guys/girl believe they are the biggest brightestt stars
    in the universe ,
    and were a daily headache.
They behaved as though we ( Nile) had no legitimate spot on THEIR bill-
as if They were complete rock gods ,
and they were ( in their minds ) headlining the tour , and drawing ALL the people .
Especially HER, who acted as if we were mere peasants , put on this earth to be grateful to be allowed on the same tour with her.
    As IF.
We added them to the bill BECAUSE we knew they would draw some people out to see them-
    duh-
and hopefully we would get some amount of exposure to some potential new listeners
But they, and a small percentage of their fans as well,
acted like everyone there was there to see them alone
    which is ridiculous -
the bill also had Hate Eternal and Origin as well, bands who certainly have their share of fans
The punchline to this story , is
Aerch Enemy belived in this myth so much ,
they immediately arranged their own U.S.
    Headline tour -
which did a fraction of the business - and certainly dispels this notion that they were "Stealing the Show every night" on the Nile tour.
    What gayness.
If you measure things in terms of having the most rock star cheesy stage moves and audience participation sillyness ,
and tired eighties glam metal riffs rehashed with a hot chick
( who is not as talented as she believes )
    masquerading as modern extreme metal-
admittedly , alot of folks did come out to check her out -
    but you know what-
as far as real , honest to goodness metal goes ,
there were 3 serious bands on the bill
Nile , Hate Eternal , and Origin ,
and Arch Enemy was the rock and roll equivalent of a Las Vegas
    Musical Show Revue
please , please , give me a break
And if anyone from Arch Enemy is reading this ,
if you have any self respect , then
take these words of truth for what they are worth -

( except for Sharlee , who is gentleman and a true Metal guy)
(and their crew guys, who were mega cool )
( and occasionly Mike Amott - who also
was a fine fellow and had a reasonable professional attitude and who managed to be friendly , and speak to us like human beings)
your behaviour was insulting and shameful.

Wow. Did I just say that out loud?
    What am I thinking?
    Oh well.
I stand by my words -
and wonder if ever I will have the opportunity
to once again be "blessed" to have the "opportunity"
of being in the presence of such "stardom"

  9. Well, I don't know what ya want since 90% of what I've been posting lately has been ignored as well. :P

Anyway, here's what I got this week...

    TROUBLE - Psalm 9
    TROUBLE - The Skull
TROUBLE - Run to the Light

Basically, if you fancy early BLACK SABBATH (except doomier) with a better singer (imagine an early-80s metal singer with a bit of an Axl Rose-ish bite to his voice), then the first three TROUBLE albums are for you. However, the band does get down and dirty from time to time -- almost proto-thrash. There's some great guitarwork on these albums too and the guitar tone is fucking MEAN!

And in case you're wondering from the album titles, yes, the first three Trouble albums are somewhat Christian (or at least have heavy Christian leanings) but they manage to avoid being preachy. The song "Bastards Will Pay" has the word "fuck" in it, if that tells you how preachy these guys are...

The thrashiest album of the three is Psalm 9. The gloomiest one is The Skull (the second half of the title track is doom metal heaven). Run to the Light is less doomy and honestly less focused, but IMO it's the last Trouble album worth having because after that they started singing about drugs and started playing psychedelic stoner rock...

    ----------------------------------------------------

I was farting around on the Net the other day and came across a French band called Midwinter. They sound kinda like Nightwish by way of Stratovarius (although that gap is tighter than any virgin if you ask me) and I think they could stand for a bit more originality, but maybe one of you guys might like it. I wish they'd sing in French like some of the older school of French bands (Vulcain, H-Bomb) just for the hell of it, because I've never heard a metal band singing in French (at least where I could understand them).

At least it's not one of those goddamned Les Legiones Noires (or The Black Legions or however the hell you say that in French) bands with absolutely no fucking bottom end...

Anyway, if you want to check out Midwinter, go here: http://membres.lycos.fr/midwinter2/ . There's nothing there but a couple of mp3s, an ugly wallpaper, and a fucking HUGE logo, though.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

    ALAS - Absolute Purity

Hmmm, nice riff to start off...female vocals, nothing particularly skilled. Oh, opera vocals. I'm getting tired of the one-octave goth queens out there. At least the music is pretty cool. This isn't anything I'd buy but I don't hate it. Maybe if it were less "gothy" and more balls-out rock I'd like it better.

ANCIENT RITES - Victory or Valhalla

OK, I've gushed about these guys for months (years?), distributed an mp3, you guys know I love this band. Not too much to say other than that.

    REBAELLIUN - Annhilation

Nice keyboard intro....OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE! Blastbeats with an okay riff on top of it. One riff. This is already boring and the first verse ain't over. If you like fast repetitive blasting death metal you might like this. I think it's crap myself. At least the singer ain't too bad. Well, this one section is cool. Maybe the other song on this disc will be better...

    AETURNUS - Burning the Shroud

Hmmmm, once you get past the opening part it gets okay, if you like death/black metal of the unusually fast style. Has some boring grindy parts but after that it gets pretty cool.

    ALAS - The Enchanted

Same formula as the first. More boring. Yawn. *changes it*

    ANCIENT RITES - North Sea

Yeah, yeah, if you haven't checked them out by now you likely never will...

    REBAELLIUN - "Bringer of War"

Well, the opening riff sounds like the guitar equivalent of a cartoon character blowing his nose. Booooooring. This is way too fucking fast for me and it's not very interesting.

AETURNUS - The Essence of the Elder

Hmmmm, it's okay. Got some good riffs. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood right now but this isn't really hooking me.

    SUNSETH SPHERE - LSD

WHERE'S THE FUCKING METAL? I'm a minute in and all I hear is some whiny bitch chanting in the background. Guitar noises that sound like a Popoid being played with. Boring. If you like female whining over mediocre metal then you'll like this. It'll probably sell a few copies since some metalheads will buy any album where the lead singer has a vagina, but holy fuck damn this is boring.

I've got half a mind to just send this sampler to whoever wants it. Maybe they can get more good out of it than I did. Inquire if interested. :P

  10. lol... its funny that the dude from NILE said that about Arch Enemy..
i saw them couple of months ago at Lamours in Brooklyn...
they have a dramatic (but EXTREMELY CHEESY) entrance to the stage...
acting like Metal "gods".... from talking with the other bands there that night they presumably have "big" egos... im my opinion i dont think there that good anyways....

on April 5th i went to Lamours again to see Deicide, Amon Amarth,
Behemoth show... . its was a awsome show... deicide played some classics... Glen Benton is a freakin nut case..lol amon amorth was great.. and behemoth killed ....

    later .... \m/
