Teams in mix for Kovalchuk include: Boston, New Jersey, Rangers, Philadelphia, Calgary, Chicago and L.A. Some more. Some less. Auction time.
I watch nearly every Devils and Rangers game that I can and it seems on most nights, collectively, our teams get 2 or 3 goals. Both of these teams are fucking miserable to watch right now. I can't fucking stand it.

Various Twitters of NHL beat writers are saying NJ is a frontrunner for Kovalchuk ATM. Hope they don't give up all that much for a rental - though, Marty's time is waning, maybe they figure they need to go for it.
Hitch fired in Columbus.
We have an abundance of mediocre forwards who are not centers and more on the way. I wouldn't mind losing some and a current defenseman for Kovalchuk. None of our D-men that aren't Martin are really the most hot shit anyway, and I'm sure one of our prospects can fill in on back pair if Fraser is given more responsiblity, and then fade when Martin gets back in.
The only issue I have with the potential Kovalchuk acquisition is that it doesn't solve the center problem. Would the second line be Rolston-Elias-Langenbrunner? Or do you keep the top line together and then go with Elias centering Kovalchuk? If the Devils are going to drop enough to get a guy of that caliber, I'd rather it be a center, even if he is a tier lower.
NHL.com is reporting that its between the Rangers and Devils for Kovie. I think he'll end up in NY, myself.
Personally, I don't think the Devils or the Rangers have what it takes to get to the finals with or without Kovalchuk. I pass if I'm either team and wait for UFA time.
Sather is much more willing to overpay, but Lamoriello always has and always will have more chits, despite haoh's claims to the contrary. I hope Lou bids it up and bails.
edit: Anyone know what the compensation would be for having Kovachuk signed away this offseason? I am pretty sure there are multiple picks involved.
edit2: Nevermind. Compensation ended in 2005. +1 to things the lockout fucked up.
