If Kovalchuk signs elsewhere in the summer, this will set the Devils back years. Bergfors, Oduya, Cormier, AND a first round pick? Ouch. I hope they know that they have a chance of signing him.

Is Kovalchuk going to sign a contract or is he going to hit free agency next year anyway?
And Souray has given the suddenly streaking Oilers a list of 6 teams, 3 in each conference, for whom he would waive his no trade clause. Assuming anyone would be stupid enough to trade for someone with his contract who will be back from an operation on his hand just in time for the playoffs.

Parise-Zajac-Langenbrunner
Kovalchuk-Elias-Rolston
Pandolfo-Zubrus-Clarkson
Peters/PL3-Pelley-Hallischuk
If either Elias or Kovalchuk can play the right side effectively, that changes a lot though.

I don't think there's a choice. Brodeur is irreplaceable, so they have to go balls out to win before he retires. After he retires, they can follow the Pittsburgh plan, since the league penalizes any form of consistency and player development.Originally Posted by haohmaru

I guess it helps them short term and they do have 10 UFA's this summer. Might be time for them to blow it up this summer.

Unless one or the other collapses down the stretch, they'll have to meet pretty late. The first round is where the Devils choke or get hosed. Once they are out of there, the Caps are a speed bump.
