Thread: Finally building a new PC!

  1. My recommend for Timber: That's a bullshit system, build something like:

    * Core2Duo E8400 + some $30 cooler, and Overclock to 4Ghz. You can do this very stable, and the extra cycles will keep you even with i7 systems in most practical situations, and better in emulators.

    * Get like a Radeon 5750 HD or something thereabouts for like $140

Spend $100 on a mobo, $50 on a HD, and you should dtill be able to get out of there for the same ballpark and have some money left for Windows.

that system from dell isn't TOO bad, the worst part is probably the processor but in the long run that shouldn't matter too much

Or if you don't want to download everything like koda mentioned you can always back up anything from steam onto dvd's. File----->offline I believe.

That's a good idea but when I add in the case, power supply, dvd drive, ram & windows I'm getting to upwards of $650+ which is too much right now.

I'm thinking that's what I'm going to go with. Is it really worth it to add on $40 to upgrade to an Athlon II X2 250 (3.0GHz, 2MB) or $60 for an Athlon II X3 425 (2.7GHz, 1.5MB)?

the system you laid out in the other post should be fine (you'd probably wanna get the processor with more L2 cache anyway, which is what that MB number is)

  6. I want to build a system to use as an htpc. It doesn't need to be that powerful. I won't game on it, but I do want to use it to rip blue rays. Will a AMD Athlon II X2 240 be enough, or should I look into a 3 or 4 core processor?

I would need an external dvd burner for that, my system doesn't have a RW dvd tray, only a reader.

  8. In that case you can still just save the files on a hdd.

yeah I'll be doing that most likely as my external is big enough to backup every single file I have on my two internals altogether. (200gb internal storage, 80 and 120, 500 gb external.)

  10. Ordered my PC. Had a little extra to send and upgraded to the AMD Phenom II X4 945 (3.0GHz, 8MB) which should make this one last me a bit longer than if I had went with the dual core I was going to get. And as soon as I get a little extra scratch I'm going to upgrade to 4GB of Ram and a better video card.
