Marty never interacted with Chuck. Marty played in front of Marvin's band, who was Chuck's cousin. Marvin then called Chuck and held the phone out so that he could hear Marty play Chuck's music which then inspired Chuck to make the music Marty was playing.

I've not seen the movie in over a decade, so I don't want to see any "nerd loves him some BttF" bullshit. But it's a pretty straight forward scene.
