Thread: Virus

  1. Virus

I just picked up this virus called XP Internet Security. It installed by itself despite the attack being blocked by my anti-virus software when I visited a public torrent site. A friend of mine had something similar. It is called XP Internet Security (I think his was called Vista AntiSpyware 2010 or something). I wasn't able to kill it on his computer even though I was able to find the virus itself. I was able to knock it out by denying program permissions for all the programs on the computer which was just a temporary work around because that has many of it's own problems. I'm running a virus scan right now and I'm hoping it gets picked up but if it doesn't, I need to find a way to kill it.

I'm using Safari right now, the only browser it doesn't seem to fuck with. It blocks internet activity and asks me to register the program (which is likely a scam to get credit card numbers) to knock out all the imaginary viruses on my computer. My anti-virus software is ESET NOD32 (which I don't really know all that much about, it came from a private torrent contact and seems to do well enough). Anyone else heard of this virus? Anyone have any ideas of what other programs I can try if my anti-virus software doesn't find it or any other tips to knock the virus out? It runs in the task manager as av.exe. I'll try running a search for the file itself.

  2. format

I did that tonight too! although I think I was just being paranoid, but when security essentials pipes up with something called "virtool:win32/vbinject.dn" and paypal says "suspicious activity" a few days later something is rotten in the hen house

  3. I'd like to avoid formatting. My virus scan is still running but I did something to the file. It encounters errors when it tries to start now but the problem is I can only open Safari and not any other browsers because they close with the virus. I think I found some of its installer files just by running a Windows search.

  4. if it installs itself and gets around your antivirus app, it ain't gonna go away that easily

if you won't format, then at the very least drop into safe mode to do your virus scans

  5. I got it taken care of. Google helped.
