HDMI is the only way to get DD+ or DTS-HD. Its pointless to run extra cables unless your running to audio hardware that doesnt have HDMI decoding.

As far as 3D HDMI goes, my understanding is 1.4 doesn't exist and it's a marketing ploy? That any 1.3/1.3a cables can do 3D. Can anyone verify this?

I also read that the receiver must be 3D compatible, so does that mean old receivers can't get a firmware upgrade? My cousin got a good deal on a Denon 3808ci, but if it can't do 3D, not sure it's worth it since everything else he got is 3D ready.
