See, here's the thing. The comic Walking Dead is brilliant, and early on it seemed like this show might be just as good.

It isn't. It's complete shit. Stop trying to defend it.

Bit of advice- if you like the show, pick up the giant omnibus book. It'll blow your doors off.

But yeah, lots of overwrought dialogue this episode. I'm hoping they start shutting the hell up and working on the business of surviving, rather than trying to rationalize why they'd want to live in such a horrible world. This isn't characterization, it's just scenery-chewing.

Everything after getting out of the city in season 1 has had nothing to do with what happens in the comics.
