Thread: The Walking Dead

  1. I do feel for channels like AMC and FX. They'll put on great HBO-caliber shows that critics and fans love, but if you look at the ratings, they're like 1/10th of what shit like Glee or House gets just because of the channel. There's 60,000 channels and if you're not on one of the ones people turn to out of habit by default, it's hard to get ratings.

That said, in for a penny in for a pound. If they want to do this kind of TV, they have to stand by it when it's working.

    Ratings are stupid.

TV in general is pretty stupid. I wonder how long it'll last.

Mad Men was the first show that made people say "Oh, look. AMC can make a good show". It has very little do to with "making their network", however.

The Walking Dead easily doubles the ratings of both Mad Men and Breaking Bad. When they gave that contract to Weiner, it was The Walking Dead who took the brunt of it. They basically halved their budget.

Yeah I definitely feel that way, I'm sure more and more people will, but it's a matter of finding another way to monetize it.

Like Louie did real well on Hulu and Netflix, but it gets like 0.7 million viewers a week on FX. People like the show and they watch the show they just don't turn on FX. And that's fine for Louie since that show is almost free to make, but when it's Breaking Bad that's a real problem.

They really just don't have the resources to handle enough shows to build their network.

One of the things FX stinks at that networks thrive on is building a programming block. Their Sunday night line up has framed Walking Dead not as a drama or a horror show, but as a show for comic nerds, which is really kind of stupid. Comic nerds are the first ones to turn against that kind of show. If AMC could ever put two good shows on next to each other they might get people to actually watch instead of just Tivo-ing the thing they like.

That said, Mad Men is a way better show than Walking Dead ever was, so...

  5. They actually tried. Breaking Bad used to start in March or April. Last year they held it back so they could put it together with Mad Men, but then Weiner held up contract negotiations for months and Breaking Bad aired in July without Mad Men to go with it. Now Mad Men starts in March and Breaking Bad starts in July - they basically switched places.

Mad Men/The Killing is probably their strongest lineup of the year and The Killing fucking blows.

  6. What the hell happened tonight?! So now Shane bit it but I couldn't make out what's out there or why people are turning into zombies after they die.

  7. Yeah, unless I missed something they just decided that everyone that dies just turns into a zombie even if their death had nothing to do with a zombie. WTF?!?

  8. I had to watch it again and saw zombies going to the farm. the inevitable zombies finding the farm makes me wonder why they never built a better fence. And as far as the zombie death transformations, I'm going to say it's the water. They've already found a zombie in there, not too far a stretch.

When there's no more room in hell, the dead walk the earth.

Walking Dead follows largely George Romero zombie rules. Getting bit by a zombie kills you, but dying for any reason makes you come back as a zombie. The zombie bite isn't what makes you a zombie, the dying is. This is how a proper Zombie apocalypse should be, not some virus bullshit.

Yup. That's how it works. Don't know why it took them this long to figure out, but get used to it.

Do you know what is really supposed to happen during a zombie outbreak?

Whatever the fuck you want because some asshole just made the whole thing up. Who cares?
