Microcinema DVD announced a six-picture acquisition of Alex Cox movies, not currently available on DVD in the US:

Straight to Hell Returns: A brand new director's cut of the cult classic starring Joe Strummer. The original isn't one of my favorites, but it deserves to be on DVD.

Searchers 2.0: Cox's ultra-low budget road movie from 2007. Shot for about $180,000, but featuring one of Cox's strongest scripts in years, and a long, long overdue return to the comedy genre that launched his career. Repo Man fans should see this. Previously only available in Japan on DVD, and never released theatrically except for individual screenings and festivals. I reviewed it here.

El Patrullero: Cox's first Mexican independent, and one of his better movies. Completely Spanish-language, with a local cast, and artful "plano sequencia" camera work in the tradition of Mexican directors like Arturo Ripstein and Alfonso Cuaron. It was released theatrically and on VHS in the US, but the DVD has been import-only until now.

Three Businessmen: One of Cox's more obscure movies, it's a subtly surreal story of a pair of travelers who set out from a Liverpool hotel and inadvertently circumnavigate the globe in a single evening. Pretty good, you can get it on DVD in the UK on a 2 pack with El Patrullero, but it's good to have it out officially in the US.

Death and the Compass: Cox's second Mexican feature. Originally a made-for-TV retelling of Luis Bunuel's short story with a strange, surreal edge, later expanded to a feature-length film for a theatrical release.

Revenger's Tragedy: A retelling of the early 17th century play, set in modern-day Liverpool. It uses the original dialog a la the 1996 Romeo and Juliet. Previously released in the US but no longer available.

In other news, Repo Chick, Cox's pseudo-sequel to Repo Man appears to be up for preorder on Amazon.co.uk. No word on a US release yet.

Now if only we can get a re-release for Sid and Nancy we'll be rocking.
