One demonstrates that "hardcore" is some bullshit superficial label manufactured by the niche-in-a-niche to feel good about themselves and is further reinforced/exploited/capitalized on by devs, pubs, and marketing. The other demonstrates a dedication towards getting better-to-proficient-to-expert in a single thing.
    STFU, please.

I called you a soccer mom because that's what your wishy washy, trend-following, cell-phone focused bullshit reminds me of.

I mean, we had years of listening to you whine about the DS, about touch screen "gimmicks," the horrible "casuals" invading your hobby. Then we turn around and it's all, "HOLY SHIT. I JUST SMEARED MY WAY TO VICTORY IN THIS AMAZING $1 GAME ON MY PHONE: ANGRY BIRDS. GOTY!!!"
Certain games work well with certain control schemes, and Angry Birds happens to be one of them with a touch screen. Plants vs. Zombies is another. It's better with the touch screen than even the mouse. I wouldn't touch either one with a controller, because they don't fit. This is as opposed to the DS, which had a bunch of great series shoe horned onto it, ruining them. The DS didn't make anything better, because the touch screen is rarely where the action is, so even genres that work well with touch screens don't benefit on that bad hardware. I will do whatever is necessary to play the best version of every game. That is often a control discussion.

It's hysterical that you think I follow trends. I'm elated to know that people are jumping to PC gaming in droves though. That's fantastic news and counter to everything I keep seeing, especially from the casuals, who I consider the people buying Call of Duty on the 360. I think you're confusing them with nongamers, who are the ones playing shit on Facebook and what not.

  3. People are finally moving to PC because the industry stopped trying to make recent hardware obsolete with every major game release. We are at a point where any decent card released in the past 3-5 years is acceptable for most brand new games.

Making Crysis 2 so accessible spec-wise was a very good thing for the PC gaming industry, as much as the neckbeards may complain about it (when they aren't ironically complaining about the poor state of the industry). Crysis 1, as much as I love it, was a monument to everything that discourages people from trying to build an affordable gaming PC.

Your sarcasm detector is broken. And Crysis was a huge anomaly. The cost of PC gaming has been a myth for at least a decade.

  5. Are you saying that the pace of hardware/engine development hasn't been much slower in the last few years than before that?

It has slowed down but not nearly to the degree you were making it out to be. A lot of the games slowing down is more due to the multiplatform garbage than the hardware. Consoles are now holding PCs back big time.

  7. Maybe my memory is just Hazy but I do remember a time period when most devs made their own engine, and there was this constant push for one upping everyone else. It seems to me (and I could be wrong here) that there is far less of that happening. It seems most devs are fine to use UE3, which came out HOW long ago? It definitely feels to me that the hardware is there for PC games to look leaps and bounds better than console games. It doesn't feel like the engines are being pushed though, I mean outside of Crysis.

So while I fully agree with Proto Man that engine development has slowed down big time, I disagree about hardware development though slowing down.

  8. It has though. Die shrinkage and other improvements are often taking precedence over raw horsepower when it comes to graphics cards. You can buy the fastest card out there, and still have the fastest card 1 or 2 gens later depending on the situation. Now if that's right then it's not so much of a slowdown as it is a different focus.

And isn't this Core i7 platform sticking around longer than all those Pentium, etc. ones did? My memory is pretty hazy on that.

People who bought a 480 don't have the best card now that the 580 is out. Maybe I am just missing what you are saying. I also don't think the CPU generations have slowed. I have always upgraded every other generation, and that's been relatively consistent if memory serves.

  10. I just had my first StreetPass Mii visitors! Exciting!

I've been carrying my 3DS in sleep mode in my briefcase during the day, hoping to run into someone.

First thing I did was send them to fight (and die!) in my Find Mii dungeon.
