Except Prime controls are not a fit for all FPS.
Metroid Prime did no analog first-person pretty well, they should just refine that further and use that style. Face button looking always feels awkward to me and just makes me want a proper lock-on anyway.

I'd still prefer them over face button shit, and there's not really any type it can't handle as long as the game is designed for it. You're right in that most developers would probably try to use normal FPS design and then shoehorn in the lock-on and it wouldn't fit, much like when 3D FPS' first got ported to consoles and they didn't make concessions for the lack of a mouse.
PSP Resistance killed any desire I had for trying face button free-look again.
Gears and Halo are supposedly two of the best games on the 360. But if I don't give two shits about them (and I don't), I'm not missing anything.
