I like the New RE games (4, 5, now this). Be it in SD, HD, or 3D, it's a fun series. So in that sense, increasing resolution or adding a (fake) level of depth in view has nothing to do with the game itself being entertaining. It's a nice addition, not vital to the game itself.
Now take something like RE4 on Wii. Gimmick or no, the control scheme actually changes the way the game is played. You may find that traditional controls work better, but there's no denying that the fundamental interaction between player and game is now different than it used to be.
I don't see this same change with 3D (or hell, HD) displays. They are a clever gimmick of their own and, when done right, actually make the view really sharp and interesting. But does it really change the way the game is played?
Not to say that I would prefer things go backwards (start making new games in SD for example), but I don't think advancing technology, especially when it doesn't change gameplay, should make older games obsolete just because they "look old."
