Thread: Official Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, "New" 3DS, & "New" 2DS XL Thread.

  1. Holy fuck, his whiteboard setup is like a Cintiq without pressure sensitivity. I might have to try that out.

Milestone had announced Karous 3DS quite a while ago.
I've been wondering how, or if, that's coming along.

    Pretty much, yeah.

I try to think along these lines.

I like the New RE games (4, 5, now this). Be it in SD, HD, or 3D, it's a fun series. So in that sense, increasing resolution or adding a (fake) level of depth in view has nothing to do with the game itself being entertaining. It's a nice addition, not vital to the game itself.

Now take something like RE4 on Wii. Gimmick or no, the control scheme actually changes the way the game is played. You may find that traditional controls work better, but there's no denying that the fundamental interaction between player and game is now different than it used to be.

I don't see this same change with 3D (or hell, HD) displays. They are a clever gimmick of their own and, when done right, actually make the view really sharp and interesting. But does it really change the way the game is played?

Not to say that I would prefer things go backwards (start making new games in SD for example), but I don't think advancing technology, especially when it doesn't change gameplay, should make older games obsolete just because they "look old."

With 3D display by itself, you get a nice diorama effect, which is nice but doesn't really alter gameplay in any significant way.

Now combine a 3D display with a gyroscope for handheld displays or head-tracking for television displays and you're starting to get somewhere... there's just not a lot of that yet.

This guy's stuff is still better in practice than any stereoscopic screen bullshit I've seen yet, at 1/100th of the cost.

Combining the two technologies might really be something.
    This is real nifty!

I understand. And the Wii RE4 is the best version and will remain so if the PS3 version doesn't support Move. Many people have known pointer controls are optimal for shooting since, hell, when Quake came out? Maybe before?

Have they said whether or not it will? Huge missed opportunity if it doesn't.

This is exactly what I think every time I see Yoshi post that nonsense about 3D. For his analogy to be correct you would have to be completely drawn into the game world with objects and enemies completely surrounding you.

How many genres benefit from hearing stuff behind you? Two or three?

  9. Is this thing dead yet?

"All creatures will DIE, and all things will be BROKEN: That is the law of the SAMURAI."

How many genres get a gameplay benefit from diorama effect 3D? Zero? Less than one?
