Got to check out the system and pilotwings last night at best buy. Low was right about the horrible setup. I wrecked my back bending over to see the 3D correctly. They set it up so that pre-teens will get the best use out of it. After a couple of minutes I just turned off the 3D and played the game. It looked a little better than I was expecting and I'm curious what the system will be capable of in a few years when developers get used to working with the hardware. I'll be picking up Pilotwings at launch. It was exactly what you'd expect it to be so if you never liked the games this one wont change your mind.
I love Pilotwings, but Pilotwings 64 just didn't do it for me.
I agree, the SNES Pilotwings was fantastic. I tried to love PW64 but something was just missing.
I've never played a Pilotwings game![]()
I went by Best Buy and played their demo 3DS for a bit. Nobody else was there so I played it until the demo kicked me off. The system feels a lot like a DS lite, but a bit nicer. The buttons are still too small, but they feel better. The D pad is the same, okay but still too small, and it's awkwardly placed now so I don't think too many games will be using it. The analog slider is a similar design to the PSP nub, but it is much better and works quite well. Not as good as an actual analog stick, but I didn't have any trouble doing very slight movements in Pilotwings. I'm still not sure that SF4 is going to be playable on the thing with either the analog nub or the d pad.
As far as the 3D goes, I kinda hate it. To be fair, I hate 3D movies also. The 3D slider is well placed so you can quickly adjust it or turn it off. Otherwise, the screens have a good quality, comparable to the DS Lite's screen for clarity but a little bit better. Also, the system was Aqua, and the color in person looks absolutely nothing like any of the pictures online. It's a nice color, but manly men will want to stick with black for now.
The game I was playing was the Pilotwings demo. I really liked flying the plane and hang glider, the controls are pretty much perfect. Flying with the jetpack sucks ass, however. The stage was also very pretty. Graphically, you won't be wowed since it's nothing the PSP couldn't do, but the art direction is nice. I would have liked to play more, but the demo only lets you play the practice stages and then one regular stage. I'm not sure how long Pilotwings can really hold my interest, as it seems more like a collection of flying minigames, but I might pick it up.
