I don't think it was as story driven as the Wrestler, no. It had no backstory to speak of and the characters outside of Winona Ryder were pretty one dimensional: ballerina, bad ballerina, sleazy director, weird mom, etc.

You are aware the entire movie is basically swan lake right. there is no back story needed. They give you the entire story in the beginning. everything else is just going along for the ride. And it was a hell of a ride. I loved it. I guess i can take a movie for what it is and i dont need backstory to enjoy the story that is playing out.
