I remember a thread here a while back about board games, but not that much fuss over it. The relatively new "deck building" genre is really great for ex-CCG/TCG players, and seems to be a hit with the casual players (read: girls) in the group as well. Games that initially appeal to the whole group like euro-staples Carcassone, Catan, and Agricola often turn pretty cutthroat with competitive players. The deck building games let players do their own thing a bit more successfully, so the newer people don't feel so picked on.

They're a bit like drafting in a typical CCG. You start with a small deck of basic cards, which you use to buy from a communal stock. After you initial deck runs out, you re-shuffle, including the cards you added those turns. So each shuffle your deck get larger and more tuned, and you use the steadily improving deck to kill monsters or buy victory points or whatever the game mechanic is. There's not usually that much player interaction (aside from stealing or forcing discard), but the way you manipulate the communal card supplies can be very effective, weighing the benefits to yourself against the amount you can set others back.

Granted, luck always plays a factor with shuffles, but like with a ccg, you can affect the probability of things and thin out your deck using in-game mechanics. The big benefits are that all the cards are included in the box (sans inevitable single-purchase expansions), and nobody has to come with anything prepared, ultimately huge time and money-savers compared to CCGs.
