Thread: Sonic Colors

At least they said they'll send me a gift card after I inquired about it online.

I started playing Sonic Colors tonight (Two worlds complete so far) and I agree with Crafter - it is pretty good. It doesn't feel like classic Sonic, but it is fun to play and keeps things interesting.
So far, here are some pros and cons that I've experienced so far:

    Pros:
Gameplay is snappy and original for a Sonic title. Most of the gameplay is 2D, but when it segues to 3D it's pretty seamless and still controls great.
No fucking hubworld. Sonic has a Mario World style level map.
The dialog is actually really great and cutscenes are actually amusing in a Saturday Morning cartoon kind of way. It reminds me a lot of Ratchet & Clank's dialog & humor. Take that as you may.
Graphically, it looks fantastic. Sonic & Tails' character designs look better than they have in years and the character models are great. Leagues above the semi-lifeless character model used in Sonic 4.

    Cons:
It's on the fucking Wii. Maybe this isn't as much a con as a necessary evil, that evil being that focusing on one platform would improve the overall quality of the game, but it's still on the fucking Wii. I bitch it's on the Wii for two reasons: 1) I'm using the Gamecube Controller, so none of the Wii's waggle is being utilized, and 2) As Crafter said, the game is running at 30fps. This game would look stunning at a higher resolution and a finer frame rate... or at least damn good.

I don't think blowing through this game's main story is going to take too long. I'll have more opinions later.

Just finished this a few minutes ago (beat the main story, not going to try and get S Ranks or find all the hidden tokens in each stage). My overall opinion is kind of, "Meh" about it. It never became boring, but it never felt like it was hitting any huge high notes, either.
As I said in my last post, it doesn't feel a whole lot like Sonic to me. There is a lot more exploring in this game then I remember any previous Sonic game having, and every stage is designed to be played from three to a hundred times, depending on how long it takes you to memorize it and score an S Ranking.
I think if I was 10 and this was the only game I was going to get for six months (which, as a 10 year old, was often the case) I would dig this a lot more since I would want to replay my games a dozen times. As an adult, I'm more annoyed by the idea than anything.

So, my bottom line for this game, it's a fun rental and worth a playthrough, but I'd be royally pissed if I just spent $50 on it.

I hate games based around you need to play it multiple times; shit like Eternal Sonata where 900 out of the 1000 achievement points are only available on the second play through, it's just artificial replay value without actual merit.

You don't need an excuse to play a great game over and over, so it's usually a sign of quality when a game forces it on you.

  5. I played through the first world or whatever, and a bit of the two that opened up after it, and I'm not all that impressed. Half the time I wasn't even interacting with the game, and when I was, it was just too easy. I'm sure children love this stuff, but I can't see myself enjoying it without drugs.

I finally did end up buying this for $30 thanks to EB's Boxing Week sale. I have played a couple hours or so and I'm pretty impressed with it.

The percentage of "roller coaster + homing" parts is a little high for my liking but at least those parts feel like the best of Unleashed and Secret Rings and are polished enough to not be full of cheap deaths. I'm happy there's still a decent amount of real 2d platforming in there. Some of the music is excellent and when this game shines it feels like the Sega of old (SS-DC era, not so much Gen).

These temporary sales plus urges to play have resulted in me getting Donkey Kong Country Returns, Epic Mickey, and Sonic Colors around the same time. I'm enjoying all three Wii mascot platformers. Now I just need to decide how to divide my time.

I got this for my daughter recently, and NZE was absolutely right. I actually think it may be better than Sonic Generations. It looks great, for a Wii game, which is an unfortunate caveat -- if only it were multiplatform. The 3D portions are almost interactive cinemas, while the meat of the game is 2D. That's a far better balance than Generation's 50/50 split.
