I'm just gonna step in here and plug the movie Standing in the Shadows of Motown.
Brilliant lyrics:
This one may actually be 'funk' but I don't care.
The Pointer Sisters were cool once I swear!
Wanna visit me out in Seatle? Because I got TWO TICKETS WEST
Black Sinatra imo

Boo, Hiss.
This is a great flick, but there are a lot of other studio bands with a major legacy that deserve the same. Motown are the kings of pop soul, but I was always a big fan of the funky deep soul sound of the Fame Gang/Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section at Fame Studios in Alabama. Motown and Stax get a lot of credit these days, but the Fame Gang and producer Rick Hall turned out a hell of a lot of great songs, including a TON of big, big hits, stuff like:
To name but a small fraction of their recognizable classic tunes.
